Message: ... a woman who bumped into my Dak and tried to leave without leaving a note!
I was exiting the entrance of Costco and strolled into the parking lot. I couldn't see my truck from where I was standing because it was parked behind a row of cars.
Then the most amazing thing happened--I saw my truck being violently bumped hard enough for me to see it behind the rows of cars.
So I ran to the location and it was a woman driving in a '92 Dodge minivan. I could NOT believe my eyes: she went from the reverse mode to drive mode after she realized that she hit my truck.
"HALT!", says I (well not really, I just stood in front of her van and shook my head) and made her get out of the car.
Luckily, she only hit the rear bumper, and it's a very small dent on it. From the tone of her voice and attitude, I think she was only sorry that she got caught.
Boy, I was real pissed at her. People ought to have the courtesy to pay for their idiotic mistakes and she could've at least left a note on my windshield. But I'm damn glad I caught her.

Message: I have another twist on that story...
A couple weeks ago I decided I needed some new shoes. Not cause I have a fascination with shoes but becuase I genuinely need shoes for work that are comfortable. People start to notice after a while that you wear the same pair each day. Anyway I was at a place in Paramus called DSW Shoe Warehouse (plug) and I get a call on my cell phone from the police. They said I hit a car on my block when I left. I disageed with them but they said I had my paint all over the other car and I was goign to get charged with a hit and run which in NJ is 5 points on your license equal to wreckless driving. They told me to get my ass back to town and bring my insurance information to the police station so they coudl write me up. I agreed to come back but again told him it wasnt me. He disagreed demanding it was me. Since I wasnt going to argue with the police over my cell phone about such nonsense I came back. The police were waiting at my door. I saw the paint on the other car and the damage. It was pretty bad. It took the officer 15 minutes of staring at my Dak before he called backup. When his sergent came they decided to dismiss me as the evil lying hit and run driver. Turned out it was an old guy who was an eye witness. He needed to obviously get some glasses. The police were on my block and there was a big commotion with all the neighbors outside talking to eachother about the event. I asked the officers if I could go back and get my shoes. Said yes and I drove through the crowd of onlookers. Sorry for the long story.

I sure did get lucky... on this second time around. I have another dent on the side of my truck door. Obviously, somebody opened the door on another car parked next to mine earlier. And this truck isn't even 6 months old.
Mark, amazing story. I hoped the officer who accused you of lying apologized--we don't get a lot of courteous officers (remember the situation here in southern California).

Message: IMO that is the absolute worst... these people that are so ignorant when opening up their doors. I mean the spaces have been getting smaller over the last several yrs.. but now with all the suv craze.. there is no friggin' room .. still, there is the minivan driver.. again IMHO they are the biggest offenders.. they should have to do their parking portion of the drivers test in the actual van they will be driving instead of in a little civic or geo or something.
Those door dings really really get under my skin. I usually try to park as far away as possible from other vehicles (and stay in between my lines, I was taught that as a kid when coloring) they pull in and 2 of their wheels are on the line.. so they figure, "I made it in the spot.. not thinking some room to get in and out is required.. isn't the other car there to stop my door from swinging all the way open?". Anyway, this is an obvious festering sore spot for me. I'll get off my soapbox.. thanks for tolerating that vent....
Some humor.. have you ever sat in your truck and watched these people that can't park at all.. even in the vacant area of the lot and take 10 minutes of creeping back and forth trying to keep it in between the lines.. and still not being able too.. hehe.. we need better, MUCH better driver training programs in the U.S. and Canada.

(Sarcasm voice off)
with todays attitude that "it wasnt my fault, lets blame society." it trickles down into the other areas like not being able to take responsibility for being an idiot and dinging someone elses door.
This is the degredation of americas principles at its finest. anonymity is a virtue to the people with no sense of repsonsibility.
When my buddy and I were in the Navy, somebody in an old POS car parked nest to him and the owner decided to change his battery. well the guy left his old battery on my buddies fiberglass tonneau cover, after sliding it all over the place. so he had to get it repainted. My friend confronted the guy about it after waiting three hours for the guy to show. he still denied doing it, even after seeing packages for the battery washers laying on his seat.
sorry for my long rant. best thing i have found to do, is park way out where no one else does. 95% of america is too lazy to walk that far, and you wont have to worry about door dings.

Message: ...of the door ding has got to be women in Expeditions, Subrubans or Tahoes.
Most of these are driving their first "trucks" and drove an Accord, Civic or Camry before, but due to the SUV craze (not the need for something to haul things, pull trailers or go off road...just a stupid trend) they bought an SUV. They have NO sense of how wide these things are and have no idea of the blind spots they have when backing up or parking, either.
I used to drive a longbed Silverado, so I know that it takes some getting used to before you're good at pulling into and out of parking places and even after 7 years of driving the big thing, it was still a challenge in several places.
I can only imagine how someone with something that big and maybe a cell phone and a few kids to distract them can NEVER learn to park correctly or back out of a space without hitting anything.
These are the biggest offenders in my opinion.
(hey, learn to drive the damn thing and be more careful or go back to the Accord...you don't NEED the truck anyways!)
Ok...rant off!!

Message: Heh, speaking of shrinking parking spaces, when I was going to school I drove my dad's '78 GMC pickup, 4x4, 3/4 ton long bed. I tried carefully to get it in between the lines. I got out and saw that all four tires were on the lines. There was NO PHYSICAL WAY to fit the truck in a single spot. In an LA parking garage I managed to fit my Grand Prix into a parking spot only 8" wider than the car (I had the passengers get out before I pulled in).
A large part of the problem lies in people viewing cars as tools and nothing else. And they don't care about taking care of thier tools. My guess is that most people on this board see thier vehicle almost as a companion. It gives them a ride, it's thier entertainment, it's thier investment, and it's thier pride because they worked hard for it and often worked hard to get it how they wanted it through customizations. It's a kind of trophy.
The only cars that aren't driven by fools that have long term dents are the beater trucks and offroaders. Those vehicles are usually in situations where a dent is near unavoidable (hey, jeeps roll). When a Honda Civic has a dent on all four fenders you're not too suprized that the driver has the seat leaned back so they can read thier mail while running people who give a rats ass off the road (you are suprized however that there's a kid in the back that's still alive). But that's another story.

Message: People today don't take responsibility for sh!+ and you're right, the cops are no better on some accounts too. I actually witnessed someone hitting a car in a parking lot and leaving. a teenager is backing out and hits the car he's parked next to. how? i don't know. ya figure he'd pull straight back right? nope. he turns the wheel right away and catches the other car's rear bumper on the way out pulling it out a bit. i stop and look at the kid. he stops. pulls forward (i'm thinking he's getting out). wrong again! he straightens out the wheel, backs out and leaves! I took the kid's plate# down and left a note on the victim's windshield with my name and # if he wants to press it with the police. the guy called me and i explained to him what happened but he said his friend owned a body shop and would fix it for him for free. but you are all right about the nerve of some people. if i come out and someone is parked close to me, i hold the door from hitting their car if i'm not able to open it up to it's "first standard opening point". most people i don't think do that either. i resort to parking far away from everyone else.

Message: I was up in good ol' downtown Bothell, WA, ; ), when I saw an old lady pull into the parking lot I was standing in. I was waiting for someone so I watched her pull into a tight spot then try to re-adjust by backing out. Well, she backed out and left parts of her front end on the adjacent pathfinder. What was kind of hilarious, in a sick way, was that when she became surprised in the fact that she hit the car, she kept the wheel cranked and just continued down the side of the car until she was clear, rather than adjusting the wheel when seeing she was hitting something. She then zipped around to the other side of the lot and parked. Missing headlight, blinker, and paint. She walked right by me, staring at me, looking pissed off. Soon after, a family came out to get into their pathfinder, and didn't even notice the hideous damage! I felt bad for the old lady, but went up and knocked on the pathfinder window. I told him his car was hit. His entire family, in a moment of shock, said "what?". He got out and saw the damage, then looked incredibly disappointed. I then patted him on the shoulder and said, the car that hit you is right there. He looked a little better after that. We walked over there, and saw the damage that was on her 88 Dodge dynasty. You guys remember, the kind with the velvet interior. ; ) Well, left him my business number and told him to call me if he needed a witness. Had to run.
It's really too bad this type of stuff happens. I had someone do the same thing to my dakota and not leave a note, so I'm a bit bitter about the whole thing. I, personally, have never hit another car in my life, (that wasn't on purpose). I hope I never do but if the time comes, I'll leave a note. I do have some pride in myself which is more than I can say for some. It's the responsibility you take-on when you get behind the wheel. Gotta live with it or bus it.

More than just the damage to the car/truck, it speaks about the personal character and values of the person who does it and then tries to sneak out of it. That's what really chaps me. I can't believe the story about the old lady and the Pathfinder, that's just incredible. And, she acts like she's the one who should be pissed off for raking the side of the other vehicle? Unreal. This is why I'll park 100 yards from the front door if I have to. My wife gripes about it all the time, but I tell her she can use the exercise. If it's raining, I drop her off at the door and go park. I won't give these clowns any more opportunities than I absolutely have to to ruin my day.

When my truck was still only about a month old, I was walking out of Home Depot and a little frickin' asian who was parked next to me was trying to stuff a broom or a mop or something into his little jap teeny weeny two door (that was stuffed with all sorts of $hit)...while he was trying to stuff the broom he was hitting my truck on his backstroke, not only once but three times, then he tried another angle and tagged me a couple more times. By this time I was very rapidly closing in on him. He saw me, jumped in his car, drove forward over the parking stop and haulled a$$ away. Luckily most the scratches rubbed out with compund, leaving only one that I fixed with touch up paint....frickin' asian gooks with no respect! San Diego is full of them!

Message: See thats the problem with the world, I take precations to protect my equipment (that I worked and sweated so hard for) and others that think they are the protectors of the Universe have to prove a point by parking to close or pissing on it(not), but you drive by the crack dealers on the corners and turn your head (because they may shoot back if you do something to stop it) like it's not happening.
In reality, I've been parking x-ways of 2 parking spaces for 15+ years and have yet to have any one able to park that close to my driver door. I have had some folks give me some real dirty looks, mumble under their breath (because they have no Kahunas). Maybe the 6'1"/250#, bubba looking, to thick in the upper body frame I carry.
If you truly respect yours and my equipment then when you see some one parked across 2 parking space's you'de think:
1. Nice Ride
2. Wish I'de thought of or remembered to do that.
3. There is a person that takes a lot of pride in his ride.
4. Next time I will park like that to protect my Ride.
5. Maybe the driver or passenger is handicapped how would I know.
Instead you think:
1. What an A$$, who does he/she think he/she is?
2. That pi$$es me off because I can't remember to do that.
3. If they are handicapped $crew them.
If someone dings your ride, scrapes your ride, backs into your ride it's 110% their fault. Well not true, the cliche' is "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure". I take that ounce of prevention, and cover my 25% of the responsibility for taking care of my ride.
Pull off the blinders and look around, other people have different views of right and wrong, and you are not 100% correct all the time.
Just an A$$,

To my story... I went up to norther Michigan on vacation and parked my truck in a public beach access parking lot for Lake Michigan. I parked as far away as possible for a busy summer day. When I came back to my truck later that day to leave, there was a 6 inch gash down the front driver side fender that looks like it was made by someones zipper. Next to my truck was this old POS minivan parked 12 inches away from the side of my truck. Luckily there were no other dings. I had no proof as to who did the damage. I tried to polish it out, but when I got down far enough not to see the scratch, I could also start to see primer. I figured it was worth a try since I probably would have to get it painted anyway. It cost me $250 to have the fender painted, but it looks beautiful again. At least I didn't have to polish any orange peel out of the clear coat like the factory paint.
