Subject: Removal of automatic shifter
IP: Logged

Message:
Does anyone know how to remove the automatic steering column mounted automatic shifter on a 98 Dakota? The shifter has a pin that holds it in, but I don't know how to remove the pin. The O/D switch broke and I have the new shift arm, but I can't get the old one out.

Thanks

I am pretty sure the pin just taps out with a punch. It has been a while though.

Did you get the automatic shifter removed? I have the same problem and I can't get the darn thing off. It seems like the thing is pressed in or something. Can you let me know what you did?

Thanks

Does the pin just tap out?
I need to replac mine as well.
I started to bang on it with a hammer and screw driver, but it wouldn't bidge and I figured I'd look it up before I broke something.

I even tried to call the local Dodge dealership and ask the service managers, but he of course didn't have a clue.....

Oh well, At least I found this thread....

So does the pin just tap out or is there some trick to it?

Thanks for any help...

It taps out, use a nail set or similar tool of the right diameter.

From which side should I tap it out?
SHould I hit it on the bottom and pop it up and out the top? Or from the top down?

Sorry about all the questions... I just don't want to break anything.... I'm known for doing that...LOL

Doesn't matter which direction - it's just a roll pin (flat metal rolled into a cylinder).

Thanks I guess I need to just drill it out and use a bolt or screw with a nut as a replacement

Thanks for the help though

I wouldn't try a drill, it will bung up everything. If you buy a nail set (which looks like an awl, and is used to tap nail heads below the surface of wood), tap the pin out with the nail set and a hammer, you should be able to reuse the pin.

measure the diameter of the pin, then go buy a good quality pin punch the correct size. the right tool to do the job properly and with no problems. most nail sets are tapered and could cause damage to the shifter arm. nail sets are also not hardened as a quality pin punch will be.

Thanks anyways
I just drilled it out, but I took my time and only broke 5 cheap drill bits.... I then put the new shifter on and used a 1/4-20 screw with a nut and lock washer

Now everything is cool and working fine, plus I didn't break anything I didn't want to break...LOL... That's always a good thing.

But thanks for the help guys and maybe some one else will be able to use this info in the future...

Take it easy
