Subject: Lost my rear brakes today on mountain tw IP: Logged
Message: Dude this truck is making me MAD. I lost my brakes today going up a mountain twisty road. I heard a grinding sound and my pedal got all mushy. I had front brakes so I tried to stop with those. it wasnt slowing down enough so I had to do the emergency brake also. It snapped the cable but it slowed me enough to coast to a stop. its at the dealer now but I got there too late for the service people. So it wont be until monday when ill know about the total damage. I have a extended warranty so I guess thats a plus. Oh being alive its a BIG plus
Ill let you guys know how it goes. This WILL BE my LAST Chrysler/Dodge product

Message: 2000 Dakota
the truck is basically stock with the exception of a tonneau cover spray on bed liner a winch and warn mounting kit and mud tires and a cd changer
it has 40 000 miles on it. What I believe happend was the pasanger rear brake got hung up or dragged on the drum and it locked up for a sec jsut enough to extend the brake cable. when i used the e brake it snapped cause there was probably already tension on it.

Message: At 40,000 miles you should be ready for rear brakes along with fronts ?.. have you ever checked the rear brakes prior to this mishap? I always check my brakes when I get into the 30,000 mile range, and keep an eye on them. Sory to hear about your problem but I believe in preventive maintenance. Dont give up on a Dodge product..

Message: Wow sorry to hear that. While it is true that most american vechiles need brakes around 36,000 miles this is not normal for the entire market. Only American brands need brakes this often. It is not uncommon for Japanesse cars and truck to go 100,000 to 120,000 before needing pads and shoes. When going down steep grades their is a brakeing technique that can help prevent what happened to you. DOT recomends that once you get to 5MPH over the speed you want to be going you brake until you are 5MPH under the speed you want. Then you get off the brakes until you are 5 past the speed you want. You keep repeating this till you are down the steep grade. If you try rideing the brakes you are going to loose them for sure. Remeber you can always down shift even with an automatic!!!!

Message: Sandman ya better check your specs there. My last dakota had 50,000 miles and it still had over half of the pads left. I am not easy on brakes either. My 86 went to 80,000 with lots of heavy hauling and overloading. Up to 3,000lbs in the box alone.

Message: Brakes last forever on a manual if you downshift. On an auto I would check them at about 30k and change them around 40-45k.
