Hi All, I ordered a new 2001 Quad Cab about two weeks ago and would like to put a nice toolbox in the back. I would like a diamond plated one but have not been able to locate anything that fits like a traditional pickup toolbox due to the short bed lenght. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I am thinking I may have to resort to a chest type box (UWS Wedge Chest or similar)instead. I want to leave the bed open right now too. Let me know what you are currently using or recommend. Thanks!

6 weeks and waiting: Patriot Blue QC SLT, 4.7L full time 4x4, 3.55 LS

I had the same problem. I found a box that is a regular diamond plate box but half the size of a full size one. You cant't fit a "lot" of stuff in it but it does offer some nice extra storage. Big thing is that it looks right on the shorter bed. E-mail me with your address and I'll send you a picture. Dont have a way to get it on the site yet. I forget who makes it but I'll check when I get home today.

I was looking for a diamond plate box for my 93 longbed Dakota that would sit on top of the sides of the bed and has one lid instead of two on each side. I finally had to settle on one made by Delta for Tacomas, S-10's, etc. Its only an inch or two from being flush with the side of the truck on both sides and is only about 12-14" deep, but it holds all my offroad gear(tow straps, tow chains, hi-lift jack, half shovel, etc.)

Thanks for the info. I don't think the Delta one will work due to the height of the wheel wells. Anyone have any experience with UWS http://www.uwsta.com/truck.html ? They have a wedge chest and a slim line series that may work. I just don't want to get something that takes up more space than it actually provides for storage. Looking to store tools, towstraps, 1st aid and fire gear, etc. There is not much space between the front of the wheel wells and the front of the bed to fit a standard box in. Again thanks for the assistance!

I know this is an old thread, but I just ordered a custom box from Highway Products, Inc. to fit my QC. I looked at UWS but it's a tiny box for the money. Highway made me a low-profile box to my specs that includes a 12v light, removeable alumunim tool tray, gas struts, and more, all for only $150 more than UWS.

I'll send pics as soon as I get it installed.

Ahhh, good choice. I've had one for about two years now. Highway Products was great to work with, and it only took about two weeks from the time of design to arrive at my door step. Also had the interior Rhino Lined.

What's really goin' on?

Rhino lined? Good call. I'll have to look into that. Good to know you are pleased w/ your box. Did you get a custom job, too?

So far, Highway has been great to work with. Makes it easy to justify the additional expense of a custom box.

Hey RESQready

Just curious, what are the dimensions of the box you put in your QC?

The Rhino Lining is nice, but it took a lot of prep work on my part -- I wanted to keep the cost down so I did all the masking, etc. myself.

I'd have to look back at my drawings, but I think the box is 55" wide, 26" deep, and 20 some inches tall. It sits flush with the bed rails and has cut outs on either side for the wheel wells. I'll post a pic on my website and give you the link.

Did your box have a 12v light? If so, where'd you wire it? They told me all I'd have to do is find a fused wire and hook it up. I know nothing about that stuff.

Thanks

I cheated a little. I have a dual battery system with the second battery in my tool box (the only place I could fit it).

For you, I'd suggest running a dedicated, fused wire from the battery down along the front wheel well to the frame of the truck, then up into the bed. Be sure to protect the wire and keep it clear of engine heat. A 14 ga wire will do. Of course you could run an 8 or 10 ga wire and add a 12v accossory plug in the tool box for a hand held spot light, air compressor, or what ever. By the way, the 12v light is grounded to the toolbox, so make sure your box is connected to the bed.

Thanks for your pointers. I like the idea of the 12v accessory plug in the box. We do a lot of camping and beach trips, an outlet for an inflator would be tremendous.

I just looked at your profile and see you're in Mtn. View. I'm right down the road in Sunnyvale. Would you mind meeting to compare boxes & trucks, if so, shoot me an email. I've got a white 02 QC & I like the mods on yours. I'd also like to learn about some places around the bay area to off-road... Picked up my truck a few months ago after letting go my baby, 85 Grand Wagoneer. I'm anxious to test out the capabilities of the Dak.

Thanks again...

The box came and it is quite nice. Well worth the extra money for a quality box! Got the light wired and added an accessory plug per your suggestion (thanks, btw)!

Give me a hollar when you want to check it out.

I got that toolbox for $175. Its a $300 box, But, the place i got it from also takes in trades on truck accesorries. So i had a camper shell for my old 1987 Dakota 4x4 truck, i never used the shell, and im selling the Truck any way. The shell was given to me at a local mini market, i stopped to get lunch one afternoon, and the guy saw my truck, and had tried to sell the camper, but couldnt, and told me if i wanted it, i could have it, any way theres my story, just thought i would chime in.

UWS now has a larger tool box to fit the quad cabs if anyone is interested. The model number is TBS-63-A. Before they only had that little "slim-line" series box. Way too small. I think the one I got is about 18-inches in width. Also, it doesn't go all the way to the floor of the bed so you still have room to lay a few sheets of plywood. If anyone would like to see what it looks like e-mail me and I will send a picture. I'll try to post them on this site in the mean time.

WeatherGuard just came out with a box made specifically for Quad cab style trucks.

The part No. is 137 for diamond plate and 137-5 for black.

Don't let them tell you this is the wrong part number, my dealer didn't even know they had one in the back. They (KNAACK) changed the box but did not change the part numbers.

Fits perfect 8.9cu. ft of storage.

Contact KNAACK directly and they can tell you were to get one in your area!! 1-800-456-7865

good luck!
