Subject: Help- Leaky Transmission IP: Logged
Message: I have a '96 Auto 4x4. Everytime I park in my drive with a bit of slope on the truck, it leaks like a sieve (about a half quart over night). I can tell it is coming from where the transfer case bolts to the trany. About 2 months before I bought it a year ago, the guy put a new transfer case on it. I think he screwed up the seals that go in between them. My question is, what kind of seal is between them? Is it an o-ring, rubber gasket, paper gasket, RTV seal? Has anyone ever replaced this? I've never done this and wanted to see how big of a job it is before I attempt to do it next week. Thanks in advance,
Jason

Message: I'm not too sure if it is or not? I don't know what kind of seal is between the tranny and transfer case, but I do know that it is where the leak is coming from; I can visually see the fluid dripping from there. Could this be the rear seal? If so, how hard is it to replace? Is it an expensive part. Is there even a front seal to the transfer case or a seal between the tranny and transfer case? I went to the library to get a Chilton's Manual, but they don't have one that covers my truck.

Message: In most cases it is a felt gasket but I am not absolutely sure.
However I always take my truck to my friend who owns a transmission shop and he always treats me and my truck right.
I recommend that you let someone else do it.

Message: i have a 99 r/t and i had a problem where the output shaft seal(yoke) kept blowing. they finally ended up changing out the rear housing on it and that fixed it.

Message: Great, Thanks for your help. I think that I'm going to try to tear it down on Thursday after school and we'll see just exactly what is in there. I just wish that the local library had the book. I'll find out what the problem is and maybe even post some pics on the web.
