Message: I have heard from some people that the brakes on the dakota'a are horrible. I have a 2002 Dakota and I have notice two things. When I am at higher speeds and need to slow down, I wont stomp on the pedal but I will press it hard and I find that the truck doesnt slow down quickly at all. I have to downshift alot of the time to ensure that I stop. I also notice that the antilock will kick in sometimes. Any one else notice this or know what the problem is?

Message: I've noticed on my 02 CC SLT+ that the anti-lock seems to kick in a little early on what I'd categorize as only moderately heavy pressure. But I haven't experienced any stopping problems per se.

Message: I've noticed the clicking that normally indicates ABS action on moderately hard stops, but I don't think that's it. I remember the specs for my '02 saying it had something like "electronic brake proportioning", which is supposed to better distribute braking power between front and rear brakes. I'm wondering if that activity is what I'm hearing.

Message: The antilock kicking on is annoying but im more concerned with the lack of braking power. At times if feels like the brakes are barely stopping the car. Its only when im at higher speeds and trying to stop. Anyone else have that problem?

Message: Greg you may need to adjust your rear brakes up some, sounds like they may be out of adjustment, I had the same prob on my 2k Dak, and after I adjusted the rears up, problem solved, stops on a dime.

Message: I thought of that too. I think im gonna try that. It just pisses me off that I have to do that after 8000 miles. But if it works, ill be happy.

Message: Glazed rotors and drums will do this. I had to have my rotors and drums turned to take get rid of the glaze.
After I had everything turned, I tightened up the rear brakes and this solved the problem.
BTW, 98 Dak CC. Forgot to mention this.

Message: My 2001 CC 3.9 4x4 that I bought almost exactly one year ago has about 21000 miles on it and the brakes are starting to pulsate, probably not too much longer and I will have them turned. I have towed a 19 foot ski boat and boy I wished I had trailer brakes!

rotors? my dak has 15,000 miles on it, and
they squeeked the first day I bought it, and
now, I have a hard time stopping...ya think they
would do a recall or something. oh yeah, I am
switching to R/T wheels soon, and wanted to
know if the stillen's would fit?

Message: I am bringing my 02 CC Sport in tomorrow because my brakes sound like a school bus! When going at about 80+kmh (which is like 50mph?) and then start to break, they make a really high pitch sound, kinda like a huge truck or something really heavy would make. Sounds awful. I also noticed taht ABS kicks in early when breaking a bit harder.

Message: How would you go about tightening up the rear breaks? Dont they self adjust when u apply the brakes while driving in reverse?

Message: The torque of the lugnuts is critical on ANY new car today in helping prevent the rotors from warping. 27,000 miles, 4 tire rotations, and the use of a torque wrench to tighten the lugnuts is why I have NO pulsation at all. Pads still look almost new too and I always have a few hundred pounds of stuff in the bed. As far as the rear drums go, to make sure they self-adjust, in an empty parking lot go about 5-10 MPH in reverse and slam on the brakes. Go ahead and do this several times. The hard torque twist that occurs is what moves the self-adjusting mechanism. Try it. The normal tendancy of drivers is to go from reverse into drive, or from reverse to first without completely stopping while in reverse. Not completely stopping and shifting gears also shortens the life of your transmission. I haven't looked at my rear drums from the backside yet but Fords & Chevys always had a rectangular access hole that a brake adjusting tool could fit into in order to turn the small adjusting wheel if you wanted to manually adj. the rear brakes. Good luck.

Message: Just put my '00 SLT CC into the shop for the first time today for a check up. I'm having new rotors and pads put on (braking was still safe but pulsating was getting to be really annoying), 3923 plugs and the 180t-stat. I got some wagner rotors and metalazer pads for about a $100 bucks. Pretty good deal from a relative. Its been 37,000 miles. A little late on the plugs and I was really starting to feel it. I had the brakes check out some time ago and was told that the rotors could be warped but were still safe. The pads had been grooving the rotors pretty bad. Getting the truck back at around lunch time. Hopefully all will be well.

Message: I have a 98 Durango and I hate the anti-lock brakes. When trying to stop on snow covered streets they seem to come on too soon and it feels like you don't have any brakes. I know they are working as designed. I plan to pull the power wire to the system. I like to pump the brakes my self, not let something electronic do it for me. Has anyone had any luck disabling them?
