Help.
I need a tow truck for car trailer (+/- 1500lb) and the car itself (2400lb), total of 4000~4500lb. I looked a couple of F150 (1991 and 1992) with 5.0L and Dakota Sport ext cab with 5.2L(1994). I understand that Dakota need to install class 3 hitche. However, I felt that Dakota seems small. Do I need to check anything else as far as towing concerning other than engine size?
Does anybody confirm that a Dakota with 5.2L is able to tow total weight +/- 4500lb car trailer? If I buy this dakota, do I need to have anything else other than class III hitche?

Yes, you can pull that trailer. besides the hitch, you should get a transmission cooler or see if the truck has the towing package. HD batt,radiator,alt, etc.

I drag something similar to this with the 4.7 Liter and 5 speed. An 18' tandem axle trailer with 2100# race car on it, no problem. I use a draw tight hitch.

The Dakota will tow up to 6700# properly equipted... You'll need electric trailer brakes... A definate MUST HAVE. HD Service group is a good thing (if you don't know if the truck has it, take down the VIN# and call a dealership-- they can check the VIN, and tell you what options the truck has).
3.92 gearing is nice, though with 3.55 you will be able to cruise at a higher speed (60-65 mph easily) vs. running 55-60 MAX in Drive with 3.92 gearing.

Oh and by the way, I towed that same car and trailer with my '96 Nissan XE King Cab for 4 years. Nissan: 2.4 Liter 12 valve, 5 speed, VTP, lowered 2 1/2", 225/60-15's, Flashed PCM, Never had any problem with it and sure don't expect to have problems with twice as much muscle.

Towed 16000 lbs with my QC 5.9...no sweat. the rear end was sagging bad, but she pulled it right down the road. Pulled my dads 28ft Monterey with no trouble either.

Thanks for your advises. The F-150('91) has little rust, and F-150('92) has a dent. The dakota is very good body shape. However, in general, comparing with F-150, how do you think a dakota? Some suggest me that the weight of F-150 is preferrable even though it has less power.

I suggest the Dakota, My wife had a '94 F-150 Flare side 5.0 5 speed. The ford uses the mazda tranny and i had to replace it once. The truck was quick not to have a lot of power but it could do no more with the weight it had than my Dakota. (except burn fuel) The thing I liked most about it was the dual fuel tanks. We could go from Shreveport, LA to San Antonio, Tx and have enough gas to ride around after we got there with out filling up. Then fill up and go back to LA., and even if we returned late at night my wife still had enough gas to get to work the next AM.

I'd go with the F@$rd since its got a longer wheel base. Longbeds are great for towing.
Also consider the terrain your going to tow in. The guy towing 16,000 lbs with his dak would not make it up a grade very easily ;) I guess if its flat where you live, no problem!
