Message: Yes and yes...LOL.
The NV-242 transfer case = AWD, and works basically like your limited slip rear diff... It's always working, and provides some slippage between your front/rear diff. Once in 4-HI, it will not allow slippage between front/rear...and is 'locked'. You can have slippage between left & right front, as well as left & right rears (even with a 'limited slip' rear diff).
I had the NV-242 in my wife's 99 Dakota (but also had the 2-HI option that was dropped in 2000), and loved it. We would run in Full-Time about 50% of the time (especially when it rained) and had no mpg penalty over just 2WD.

Message: so you would say it's worth getting the AWD option??? the only reason and concern i have is i live in New England and the winters can get pretty bad and I don't want to have to keep switching from 4x2 to 4x4 everytime the road conditions get bad and i think the awd opposed to part time 4wd would be a great benefit..

Message: neil - i also live in the great northeast and i have a 4x4 with the 2wd/4hi/4lo set up. It's no big deal to switch really. you can switch at any point under 50mph "on the fly" (exceptions going to 4lo). you just switch based on the road conditions. sometimes I drive to work in the snow so i have it in 4hi. i get out of work and if the roads are plowed well, i click back to 2wd. takes less than 1 second. Just like turning the radio on and off. it's no inconvenience whatsoever but if you prefer the AWD then that's fine too. compare the cost to your perceived benefit gain and go from there. I like mine just fine. :-)

Message: A Dak with the AWD option just handles better in all weather conditions than conventional part time systems. Fuel economy is the same since all the same parts are moving. With AWD they are just assisting you. You still have 4 Hi and 4 Lo for serious off road action. I really don't understand why people buy pickups any other way. There is just too much weight up front and too little in back. Dry pavement, wet pavement or worse, power gets to the ground.

Message: I agree with JP. I live in switzerland and own a
dak Quad Cab and I love the AWD option. It's
worth the money not only on snowy conditions
but also on wet pavement, especialy with
those torquey V8. I have never felt that my rear
was loosing traction or slipping even during
tight turn on wet roads (a nightmare with my
previous '88 4Runner). On dry pavement,
having traction on the front wheels gives a
better handling.

Did you purchase your Dakota while in Switzerland?
I was planning to move to Europe (UK) if a job comes through.
Would I be better off buying here and shipping or can I land any better deal once I get there?

Message: I just bought a 2001 RC 4x4, and have only the 2wd, 4hi, and 4lo options. rtdkota said that he has a Dak that has AWD, 2wd, 4hi, and 4lo. Is there ANY way that I could mod my truck to have those options? I would love to have the option between 2wd, and AWD. thanks

| RE: Question about AWD on Dakotas IP: Logged
Message: neil - i live in upstate NY where the weather can get pretty dicey. I'll try to explain it a little better to you. On normal nice days you leave it in 2wd. You drive as you normally would. Say the roads are snow covered. then you use 4hi (for slicker conditions). you can drive normally in 4hi. the 50mph comes in if you want to switch on the fly. say for some reason the roads are snow covered and you start driving and are on the highway and realize you are still in 2wd. simply slow down below 50 and flip the switch to 4hi. voila! no problem. only thing, make sure your rear wheels are not spinning when you do the switch. you at least want both axles rotating in sych when you switch. 4lo is a whole 'nother animal. this is for the slickest of conditions. say it's icy and you are having trouble getting the Dak moving at all. come to a STOP and switch to 4lo. you really can't be moving when you switch to 4lo though the manual does say that you can be rolling 2-3 mph and still safely do the switch. when in 4lo, DON'T drive over 25 mph. this is only for getting max traction and not made for normal driving. once you are moving, switch to 4hi and drive on. 4lo is also for heavy towing but like i said, it's more for getting things going and you can't go over 25 mph. hope this helps. if you have the owners manual, i would suggest reading it cover to cover. it does tell you a lot. tells you how to figure max axle weights and what not.
Where in RI do you live? I've only been to Woonsocket.

Message: I was there on business years ago. CVS corporate headquaters is there. upstate ny is decent. not much to do here besides the usual stuff. looks nice in the fall when leaves turn colors but that's more north in the adirondacks. there's always lake george which is an hour north of me. in september they have a killer car show every year called the adirondack national. nice rods and stuff.
In Europe, our cars are like exotics to them. My wife has relatives in Spain. I was told if I shipped my Formula ove there, i could sell it for $40-$50,000. They said it would turn more heads than a BMW, Mercedes, Porsche etc. It would be like a Lambo over here. Funny thing is it's true. I saw the funniest thing when I was in Madrid. I laughed my a$$ off sooooo hard (I don't think the owner appreciated it). I was standing at a crosswalk and this guy pulls up to the light in a Ford Probe. He thinks he's all cool acting like Joe Playboy. I looked at the car and pointed and burst out laughing. Then I said out loud (in English) "It's a Ford Probe, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha" His big smile turned upside down. Toyota Celicas are big over there too. They think those are the sh!+ too. On that note, Budweiser beer was more expensive than Heineken and other much better beers. They thought Bud was so wonderful too! Cultural perceptions are interesting.

Message: Hello BearHit,
I purchased my Quad Cab here in switzerland,
as I'm a swiss citizen, from a dealer (2 miles
from my hometown) who is importing Dodge
truck from Canada, (those vehicles are not
officialy sold here in Europe) and I have the
3yr/100'000 km warranty. I was thinking of
doing the import by myself, but it quickly
appeared to be a real pain (transportation,
custom, vehicules inspection autorities =
D.O.T, etc...) not to mention no warranty or
dealer to complain to if necessary. I don't
know how this could be difficult in UK. Of
course the price raised a lot but still
competitive with other "domestic vehicles".
And you know, having a truck you dont'see at
each corner is pretty funny. However since
some times now, we can see here more
dodge, especially Durangos and some Dak.

Message: Hey Neil
People around here worried about MPG and
the Dak is not best placed :-) But many people
find the look awsome and are curious about
this exotic pickup because trucks here are
mainly used as "work truck" not as daily
commuter and they are not as comfortable
and spacious as the Dak QC. Dodge is not
very well known here, mainly the Viper. The
other cars are sold under the Chrysler brand.
I don't think european people wish they could
see more american vehicles, they just don't
care. However cars like the chrysler neon,
Chrysler caravan, jeep Grand Cherokee and
Liberty (named here cherokee) are very, very
common
And in my opinion, if the dakota could have a
good diesel engine like the one they will be
putting in the futur german SUV 's, they could
sell a lot more truck around here.

Message: The 2/4- fulltime option isn't available on '00 and up. It really isn't a big deal, mpg was the same in 2-HI or 4 fulltime.
4 fulltime was much easier on the transfer case when running between say, snow covered trails that then gave way to some dry hard dirt, then back to mud/sand... If we used 4 HI, we'd experience some binding while traversing the hard stuff (no slip). Once it got REALLY slippery, 4 HI was the way to go. Anytime you were in deep sand 4HI did a little better. 90% of the time 4 FULL TIME worked fine (with some slippage).
More than likely-- you get the 242 transfer case with full time, and I'd doubt you'd ever see 4-HI on the road (snow or ice included).

Message: Christophe makes a great point about the MPG. We bi+ch about gas prices here...ha ha ha. check them out in Europe. We're spoiled! you pay nearly $4 a gallon. Dakotas over there would get expensive. would almost be the same as filling up a ferrari. most euros have the compact cars with sticks. in the big cities, you should hear the trannys and brakes making all sorts of ungodly sounds. stop and go stop and go, they beat the piss out of their cars.
Look on the bright side (depends on who's point of view) the dollar is slipping against the EURO so our products appear slightly cheaper now!

That is about what I expected - and yes the gas prices would make it a more difficult choice.
But at least you will have dealer support if you had any major problems...
