I just purchased a 1997 Dodge Dakota SLT, I test drove it pretty hard and never noticed a couple things.

1. When you put it in reverse there is a sorta slipping/sorta grind sound from around the middle of the truck underneath. It happens in other gears barely. Its mostly noticable in reverse.

Any Ideas?

2. When the engine is idleling, it makes a slight clanking type, its kinda light, almost as if the fan was tapping something but more towards the engine... I am sure it hasn't had a tune up in awhile, could this be all it needs? It seems to run pretty good.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you say it is coming from the middle of the truck it would be the trasfer case unless it is a 4x2 which then it would have to be the tranny. I can only give you guess. one is that your drive shaft has problems. the others are that you have serious damage in either the transmition on the trasfer case. i would bring it in and get it looked at. The only time i have heard of what you are talking about was in a friends s-10 and it ended with him getting a tow truck because he destroied the transmition.
