Sandman,
Admission of Lack of Knowledge
I must admit that I have never been asked the components or makeup of "Lucas Oil Additive". I am not certain yet as to whether it is a "performance" additive or a "surface protection" additive, or a "protective" additive (Antifoamant, Antioxidant, etc.). I have read testimonials where vehicle owners have added Lucas Oil Additive to the engine, axles, gear box, and t-box.
In every tesimonial I have read Lucas acted as a "performance" additive (so this is a "GUESS" for now...(I'll update you when I have better info)
PERFORMANCE ADDITIVES (IF this is Lucas ... ???)
PURPOSE #1: ADDITIVE TYPE: Pour Point Depressant, PURPOSE: to enable lubricant to flow at low temperatures, TYPICAL COMPOUNDS: Alkylated naphthalene and phenolic polymers, polymethacrylates, maleate/fumerate copolymer esters; FUNCTION: Modify wax crystal formation to reduce interlockig;
PURPOSE #2 ADDITIVE TYPE: Seal Swell Agent, PURPOSE: Swell elastomeric seals, TYPICAL COMPOUNDS: Organic phosphates and aromatic hydrocarbons, FUNCTION: Chemical reaction with elastomer to cause slight swell;
PURPOSE #3 ADDITIVE TYPE: Viscosity Modifier, PURPOSE: Reduce the rate of viscosity change with temperature Polymers and copolymers of olefins, methacrylates, dienes or alkylated styrenes, FUNCTION: Polymers expand with increasing temperature to counteract oil thinning
As I stated earlier this is a "Guess" as I have never researched Lucas Oil Additive.
Federal Trade Commission Charges
I have read and I am familiar with the Federal Trade Commission Charges and settlements(with regard to the effectiveness, or lack thereof, of different oil additives) against each of the following brands:
Dura Lube Super Engine Treatment
Dura Lube Advanced Engine Treatment
Valvoline Engine Treatment
Motor Up Engine Treatment
Prolong Super Lubricants
Slick 50 Engine Treatment
STP Engine Treatment
zMax Auto Additives
Note: To date I've Found No Charges Against Lucas
In short, the FTC has indicated that all of these above mentioned companies have used deceptive advertising in order to mislead consumers into believing that their products offer advanced engine protection and performance over motor oil alone.
The truth is that not one of these companies has been able to offer any test results which prove conclusively that any benefit is gained from their products' use.
Synergy and Balance
Though some additives may not contain anything harmful to your engine, and even some things that could be beneficial, most experts still recommend that you avoid their use. The reason for this is that your oil, as purchased from one of the major oil companies, already contains a very extensive additive package. This package is made up of numerous, specific additive components...balanced and blended to achieve a specific formula that will meet the requirements of your engine. Usually, at least several of these additives will be synergistic. That is, they react mutually, in groups of two or more, to create an effect that none of them could attain individually. Changing or adding to this formula can upset the balance and negate the protective effect the formula was meant to achieve, even if you are only adding more of something that was already included in the initial package.
Additives For Professional Race Drivers
Among the most convincing testimonials in favor of oil additives are those that come from professional racers or racing teams. In the world of professional racing, the split-second advantage that might be gained from using such a product could be the difference between victory and defeat. Virtually all of the downside or detrimental effects attached to these products are related to extended, long-term usage. For short-life, high-reving, ultra-high performance engines designed to last no longer than one racing season (or in some cases, one single race), the long-term effects of oil additives need not even be considered, as the engine will be torn down and rebuilt after each race).
I will ask Amsoil Tech tomorrow, and I will also research all my sources of information. Perhaps I will have to engage in "Star Wars" tactics to find the answer and call "George" in Hollywood.

AMSOIL has approximately 30 years of test results and testimonials proving that their oils do exactly what the company says they do.

Message: Hey Amsoil Sponsor,
I enjoy reading your posts (they can be comical sometimes) and we are blessed to have you here!
Here is what I know about Lucas oil stabilizer:
100% Petroleum Based, losses it's effectiveness over time (must be replenished often) and is basically just a tackifier additive that is added to oils and gear lubes.
Synthetic lubes are tenacious and cling to moving parts just as well if not better and they last much longer than conventional lubes with or without additives.
Also many oil and lube manufacturers void their product liability warranty if you add anything to their oil or lube and Amsoil is one of them.

Due to the Proprietary nature of their Formula (as with most manufacturers), this is all that I have to report at this time.

Sandman,
To try and answer your actual question I believe that when you were asking about Lucas Oil Additive you were requesting information on:
Lucas Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer
Lucas Quote: "Lucas Oil Stabilizer is a 100% petroleum product formulated to eliminate dry starts and reduce friction, heat and wear. It allows motor oils a higher degree of lubricity which reduces oil consumption and operating temperatures. Use Lucas Oil Stabilizer in gear oil to stop leaks, reduce operating temperatures and increase the life of the gear oil. Since it is pure petroleum, it can safely blend with all other automotive lubricants, even synthetics, ATF and mineral oil. It keeps old engines alive and new engines new."
Here is what I read from their brochure:
"It raises oil pressure, stops smoking, leaking, knocking and blow-by in worn engines. It also eliminates noise, overheating, leaks, and wear in gearboxes."
Quick glance to me describes this to be a product for owners that did not perform regular maintenance on their engines and gearboxes with quality products, or owners that used additives in the past ... thereby changing or adding to the delicate balance of the original formula of the motor oils used, upsetting and or negating the protective effect the motor oil formula was meant to achieve.

Pardon me? I happen to know Harlow is LIBlackDak, and I am no relation to him and his Flaming Butthole.
Even I have been monitoring this board long enough to know that.
I also KNOW my posts are informative (finish your GED and even you might be able to understand what I write) and not a waste of server space like 75% of the posts here.
Many people have learned everything they know about performance upgrades, regular service, and mechanical "fix-its" on this forum board. It was one of the first and best forums for information on Dodge Dakotas.
Unfortunately, too many people now use this board as a "glorified chat room" (If the shoe fits ... sit on it).
This is to hmmmm and hmmmmever else.
At least I am not afraid to sign my name.
Sincerely,

Do you have anything else to add ?

Sandy Balls,
You are F-in' welcome.
Now that you have found out that only "authorized personnel" within Lucas Corporate have the answer to the question that has been nagging you since you were 9, you can now go to sleep at night (wet dreams and all).
Steven Roark (a.k.a. DamnRebel)
P.S. My wife is English and near her hometown there is a resort called "Sandy Balls" ... (no beach but the owner was truely a man named Mr. Sandy Balls). And another story ... My Bro-in-Law (a Ferrari/Masseratti Dealer in the U.K.) has the last name Butt. I offered him $10,000 U.S. to name his first son (my nephew) Seymour Harry Butt, but he wouldn't do it.
Introduction time: Sandy Balls meet Seymour Harry Butt. (and the crowd roars)
My mottos:
Life is great. We only live once. Anything I do today ... nobody will remember in 100 years. And if they do ... I won't be around to be sued, go to jail, or apologize to my kids.
LONG LIVE ALEX ... he makes me laugh ... and I was the person that started the "Search First" subject board.
LOL LOL LOL
Long Live The SANDMAN ... He gives me Hell !!!
Goodnight

98 Flame,
I agree with you this morning. It seems that every thread (especially the ones where people are asking intellegent questions) is now degredated by the time it reaches about the 8th or 9th post. We have a new "character" on the board now that goes by the name "homie", or something approaching that name, who is also attempting to destroy the integrity of this board. I noticed Mark had to remove a couple of his "threads" last night.
Another trend that is alarming is that people are posting pretending to be someone that they are not. I have seen "fake posts" where people are pretending to be LIBlackDak, Alex, Harlow, and also me. I will not comment any further on that. The only solution is to have EVERYONE register before they can post so that Mark can turn their IP off if neccessary.
Yesterday I spent approximately 5 hours tracking down and investigating and posting information for Sandman regarding Lucas Oil Additives. I am not here to badmouth anyone elses product unless the need be (i.e. snake oils). I believe that there are different products for different people according to their specific needs.
I hope my posts here were informative and if anyone else has any questions I will put in the same effort to try and answer their questions to the best of my ability and I am not afraid to admit "Admission of Lack of Knowledge" if necessary.
I hope this post makes it through the clutter and the fake posts. I hope Sandman that I was able to provide you with the information you were looking for.
BTW: Amsoil Tech also responded Lucas Info re: Formula = Proprietary Information and not public
