I just bought a Dakota Sport Quad Cab.
I like the look and security of the hard tonneau cover but also like the versatility of the soft cover.
Any suggestions from experienced truck owners???

I prefer the hard tonneau over the soft, the soft looks good but with age starts to fade and stretch.

I have the extang tuff tonno III. It is a soft top with no snaps. I have had it for a couple months and like it a lot. it comes apart real easy and has a clean look. I broke a corner piece and they shipped a new one the next day, gratis...

I have the Extang BlackMax and I'll tell you I'm glad that I had a soft tonneau because when you get the hard one, you are limited to what you can fit in back without taking the whole thing off then you need two people to do it. Pain in the ass. THe soft you can roll up and alway use the full back of your truck. Just keep in saturated with Tonneau tonic to keep it looking good. In the summer of course

I have a Downey SST inverted snap tonneau. The sanps can slide along the track. Works great except in the really cold months (like all soft covers). I saw that some companies now make a cover that hinges up like a hard cover. Good luck.

soft tops are not as limiting as hard tops are as far as the size if the load you can carry. I have a 4 and a half year old extang that at first was really good. It neither shrank or stretched, but now after that much time of sitting outside 24/7 the constant weathering has caused it to shrink enough that if I take it off like I did last winter I had to wait till spring to get most of it to snap down, now at mid-summer two of the corner snaps still do-not snap down.

I did a lot of research on tonneau covers for a week for my 2002 QC 4.7 ATX. Access makes the best cover according to the shops and comments from other Dakota owners. Try the Literider (about $360 shipped to you) from a number of sites. It is about $100 cheaper than a regular Access cover. Mine went on in no time and looks fantastic. It has adjusters to tighten it over time.

As much as I like the look and security given by hard tonneau's, I haven't seen one yet that doesn't f'up your paint cept for the checkerpro flush mount. I have a Downey SST, had one on my last Dak and it's great if you take care of it. I have heard pro's and con's of the Access Cover or copy cats of the same, and if you got the cash it might be worth looking at. Good-luck.

I am very partial to the hard tonneau cover. I have an ARE LS II fiberglass cover and have been very pleased with it. It has put a few scratches in my paint over the tailgate, but a tailgate protector is on the way. If I want to take something tall in my truck, I just unhook the four clamps and me and a buddy lift it off, but I have only done that once or twice. Just my two cents. Pics on my website.

I have a Jason hard tonneau made in Elkhart, IN. Its called the "hugger", but i have no clue why because it hangs over my bed all the way around about a half inch. Ive had it for a year or so, and i have had NO problems whatsoever with it scratching the paint on my Dak. You can kind of see the tonneau on some of the pics i have posted, but if anyone wants a closer look, lemme know and ill take some digi pics tomorrow and post them on here ASAP.

`I had the same concerns about tonneau covers; liked the way the soft covers fit but wanted more security and less hassle to get articles in and out but hard covers had to be removed to carry large items. I also looked at the sliding covers but shied away because there were too many parts (which in my mind meant rattle and binding and other problems over time). I finally decided on a fold-a-cover that I found at www.truck-bed-covers.com. It seemed to have the best features of both worlds; security but versatility. I've had it on two weeks now and love it. Check it out; it may be what you're looking for.
