Subject: Check engine code P0442 IP: Logged
Message: Hey All,
I went to AutoZone (very nice staff!!) and checked my check engine trouble light. Their scanner said that it was code "P0442: Evap leak monitor, Small Leak Detected." The guy at AutoZone suggested I change my fuel cap. I did that and the light went away....for about 150 miles. Now it is back. Does anybody have any other ideas on what it could be? Again, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Message: My truck has kicked that code at me twice in the past month...roughly 5000 miles between each incident (I had a cross country drive inbetween the two). I went to the dealer today to get a new gas cap. The parts guy suggested that I have it checked out since it's still under warranty. The only thing that I can figure is that the seal on the gas cap isn't sealing right after going through the expand/contract cycle of heat and cold...both times the codes came up were just after cold starts in the morning 2 days after refueling. The parts guy said they have a machine that will test the system to see what's leaking.
My appointment is Thursday morning and I'll post whatever the dealer says.

Message: Just got back from the dealer. New gas cap, $9. My original gas cap had a rattle in it that sounded like lots of tiny pieces of broken plastic. The new one doesn't. And the new cap has a different seal...two rings of soft rubber as opposed to a single hard rubber ring. I think my problem is solved.

Message: check out the small "tank" under the drivers side also. has 2 hoses that run to it from the fuel tank. if those hoses are leaking or are not tight, that may trip the light too.

Message: I'm not 100% sure what the tank is for. Something with fuel system pressure or fuel vapor or something. Thats why the gas cap seals are critical now. Not sure of the "whys" tho. I rebuilt a wrecked 2001 QC and that small tank (its on a bracket under there somewhere) got smacked when the truck was wrecked and cracked one of the barbed hose fittings, causing a leak. I got the P0443 or something code for a gross leak. May want to inspect those hoses and maybe consider hose clamping the ends where they attach. I think your code is for a small leak. May be harder to pinpoint. Good luck!

Message: The "small tank" is called a charcoal canister. It absorbs fuel fumes when the truck is sitting or idleing and sends them to the motor to be burned off.

Message: Check the hoses on the canister on the drivers side under the truck. The rubber part that pushes on the canister will crack. I have a new set of hoses but haven't put them on yet. Took some electrical tape and wrapped the rubber ends and pushed them back on and no codes for the last 40000 miles.

Message: 0441 is gas cap. 0442 could be sometimes but usually isn't. It's a leak that's bigger than one caused by the cap but still not huge. I had it, went through three gas caps at autozone's suggestion, getting the code reset each time but having it come back on about 50-100 miles later. The dealer diagnosed it as the charcoal canister. Once they replaced that the code never came back again. Check the canister and the lines going into it.

Message: Hey pyrodak check my post on V-6 boards I wrote check your hoses going to your EVAP purge solenoid espically the little one of the two might be split on the bottom side like my 02' was common problem I'm seeing. Yours should be located by the lower battery tray like most? could be somewhere else check there first that might be tripping MIL Lamp code, if hoses are by purge solenoid are good, continue check the whole length of both and then check the hoses by the canister under rail drivers side same procedure as above if no problem under 8yr. 80,000 miles take to dealer free to fix FEDREAL MANDATED WARRANTY FIX. Don'tlet them tellyou NO! Its not covered. Hopefully if you bought your truck new or used they left manual and the rest info.there for you if so one of pamplets explain FEDREAL EMISSON MANDATED WARRANTIES and show the advisor still have problems call the 800 or 866 toll free number they will get you through. Good Luck...
