Just got the light and used the ignition trick to read the code this
morning. Have an '03 Dakota 3.9L. It has 158,800 miles and i don't
believe any of the suspect parts have ever been replaced. I do not
get the swoosh noise when i remove the gas cap (as mentioned
above). I thought that was curious too. Will check the hoses going
to tank and the cap and post again if it does the trick.

Check also your hoses going to your purge solenoid located by your battery tray on the bottom smaller hose my 02' was split on the bottom side and other hose visible cracks trimmed them both back reconnected also be sure you don't have intake leak will trip this code.This is common problem most cases its hoses these canisters rearly fail unless tampered or something seriously wrong with your fuel issues. Solved my issue!!! I own an '03 Dakota with 4.7 V-8. At 70K miles my engine light came on and the codes were P0456, and P0442. I replaced the gas cap (reset codes) and withing a day the light was back on. Turns out my problem was in fact a cracked hose going into the charcoal filter located under the drivers seat. I simply ran my fingers around each hose leading into the filter and there it was (split wide open at the barbed connector). I just cleaned the hose and used electrical tape for now. The light is back off after a day (without reseting the codes). MAKES ONE WONDER WHAT MATERIAL THE HOSE "SHOULD BE" MADE OF???

P0441 likely just needs a new gas cap
P0442 may be worn gas cap but likely a pressure leak elsewhere
P0456 likely a pressure leak from a vacuum hose
P0446 likely a bad pressure switch
What I've gathered from a few forums and a manual is this.
1. Make sure cap is on tight.
2. Make sure seal is not worn on gas cap.
New style cap from dealer should have 2 rubber seals.
3. Inspect vacuum hoses going to charcoal canister located
under truck about where seat is or on frame rail.
Inspect vaccum hoses going to pressure switch located
under hood likely close to battery tray.
Replace any hoses cracked along length of hose.
If just end is split cut bad end off and re-attach hose.
4. For all evap components inspect wiring for cracks and
make sure all connections are secure.
5. Inspect filler neck between gas cap and fuel tank.
6. Inspect the fuel tank for damage especially around straps.
7. Inspect the charcoal tank.
8. Inspect the pressure switching valve.
9. Inspect the over fill check valve for cracks.
10. For any evap components that are attached with a seal,
make sure those seals are not leaking.
If no leaks there should be a swooshing sound when removing
the gas cap.
The error code may be erased by disconnecting the neg(-)
battery cable and turning the ignition key to the on
position and holding it there for half a minute.
The code can also be reset with a code reader. Autozone
will do it for free.
OBDII Error Code readers can be purchased as cheap as
$35 the average is about $55 the highend ones are over $100

I own a 1999 Dakota (Sport) with 3.9L engine. I inspected all those hoses related to fuel evap;--no cracks at all. It turns out the source of the leak was pin size holes in the fuel filler tube. The holes were to due to rust corrosion. (We drive in a salt mist during the New Hampshire Winters)
