 Subject: Dakota or Ram??? please help

I'll be looking for a new truck in about two years or so ,so i have plenty of time to decide but what I'd like to get is some opinions..I really like the new Ram and would consider getting a 1500 4x4 quad or reg cab..(maybe i'll wait for the 5.7 hemi) or I would consider a Dakota quad cab w/ the 4.7 (not sure if the hemi w/ be an option on the next generation dakota but if it is my god thats insane) I test drove a 2002 dakota sport quad cab 4x4 w/ the 4.7 and was very impressed it had plenty of room and was very comfortable and the 4.7 had plenty of power (Spun the tires going out of the dealership w/ the sales guy in the back ..I said I need to know if I can lay a good strip he just laughed) I did not get a chance to test it's off roading abilities but i'm sure from what ive read it shines of road so i'd appreciate any opinions to guide me in the right direction ..thanks

I'd go with the dakota just because the ram is to big and hard to mess with. I have a RC Dakota and my brother has a RC Ram2500, the Ram is a pain in the ass!

Are you planning on towing a heavy trailer, or loading a lot of stuff in the back of the truck? If not, I'd probally lean towards the Dakota. It's more than capable of handling moderate loads in the bed (sometimes heavy, I've seen it done!).
The Dakota is a lot more manauverable than the Ram do to it's size and weight difference, it's also easier to parallel park and manauver around tight areas.
But if your looking to do some serious hauling, look at the RAM. :0)
(Yes, there are some rumours about the 5.7L in the next gen, or possibly this gen, Dakota. Waiting with fingers crossed...)

If you get the Ram, make sure you get the 5.7L Hemi. If they offer it in the Dakota, get the Dakota. Either way you're looking at one hot truck (especially in the Dakota). It's going to be tough keeping the rear end under the sucker. Not that it's a bad thing...

probally if I tow anything it will be a atv or a boat at most but the heaviest thing i'd be hauling is maybe some lumber from lowe's or the home depot..i have 2 small kids so i think the dakota quad cab would be perfect..

I would never buy a silverado compared to a Ram the silversado is an over priced piece of junk..my grandfather has a 2001 silverado and that truck is a POS he has had nothing but problems and it looks so cheap and is so low to the ground the clearence sucks..so far he has had to have the fuel injectors replaced twice some fuse or something went on the 4x4 he had that replaced..one of the spark plugs was put in wrong at the factory and was causing the engine to mis-fire so all in all the silverado stands up to all other poor quality GM products

rams aren't the best made things on earth either. don't like fullsize trucks much myself. silverado has more power though(till the hemi comes out) putting a 4.7 V8 in a ram is like a cruel joke(kind of like putting a 3.9 V6 in a 4x4 dak)
either way i say go dakota

yes..get the 4.7. it gets better gas milage then the 3.9, 5.2, and 5.9 and supposedly when paired with a 5 speed it will beat a 5.9 auto.

...but have decided on a 4x2 Quad Cab Dakota with the 4.7.
My cousin has a new Ram Quad Cab 1500 with the 4.7 and though it seems like there might not be enough engine, I actually thought it wasn't THAT slow. With some basic mods, it would be a passable engine in a full-sized truck. Much beter than Ford's 4.6 V-8, but not quite as quick off the line as Chevy's 4.8 V-8 (but it has MUCH more torque than the Chevy).
The Ram IS huge and eats more gas (he gets about 10-11mpg out of his and drives it conservatively). The Ram has the best ride of any full size truck I have ever been in - even Dad's plush Lariat leathered-out Super Crew F-150 (although the seating in the SuperCrew is overall nicer...typical Ford interior - always nicer than Dodge or Chevy).
I decided against the Ram based on the fact that it is too darned WIDE! I found my cousin's Ram to be a pain in the ass in the average parking lot/garage. It is also hard to parallel park and has it's share of blind spots.
The Ram is the best looking big truck out there, but for overall driving and park-ability, the F-150 Super Crew has it beat with its more narrow stance and shorter turn radius. The Ram has a bigger interior though...everything is a trade-off.
Still, if you care at all about SOME sort of gas mileage (15 is still better than 10-11!) and have to get it in the garage, the Dakota Quad Cab is the way to go.
Stay away from the V-6 in the Dakotas, it is fairly slow, does not get that good of mileage for a 6 and from others I know that have owned them, more problematic than the V-8s.

I though that too. and maybe i do need it. so I got it..but its a V6 4x4..not smart. go with the full time(awd) one. part time is annoying. hard to turn and what not.

I got to use a 2500 diesel Ram as a loner from the dealer for a day and didn't care for it. WAY to loud (but that's to be expected from a diesel) and not too quick! :-) If I had a great big boat to tow (like my father-in-law who does own a 2500 diesel) then yeah, I can see a practical use for it... but as a regular truck to drive daily... no thanks! :-)
