Subject: My tie-rod broke!!!!
IP: Logged

Message:
Well I was 100 miles away from home, almost to the airport for a 5:00 flight comming in, and I banged a u-turn, and i was going very very slow might i ad, and POP, tie rod breaks.

I was towed 100 miles back to my house.

The truck has 57K miles on it- it is a '97 Sport 4x2 with the 4 cylinder.

Whats the deal with this? The volvo I had before this had 150K miles on it before a ball joint or tie rods was touched!! Hell, my Subaru has well over 200K miles and everything in the suspension is original, and yes we have inspections every year so this isnt an unsafe car.

This is my first dodge product, and I dont feel confident that a tie rod broke with such little mileage on it, anyone else have this problem? What would have happened if this broke while I was going 75 mph on the highway like I had been for the past 90 miles?

If you cant tell I am a little upset, Thanks for the help guys- this is a great site.

same thing happened to my 98 4 by 4 CC Dak with 47k on it. If you were smart you would replace everything that has anything to do with suspension. Upper/lower ball joints, tie rods, stearing joints. Spend the money and do it yourself, then when you are done get an alignment done.

I used Moog parts. Lifetime warranty on all stearing parts and ball joints. It happens...It is a Dodge.

I want to replace all the parts- just as you said, but I am a college student so my funds are rather tied up at this time. It just bothers me that a vehical with this kind of mileage would fail in the suspension in anyway.

Seems like our trucks have the following problems:

1.) bad trannys
2.) bad rear ends
3.) bad tie rods
4.) bad ball joints

Im sure im missing something but arnt these parts the basis for an automobile? I mean suspension and drivetrain are the heart. Sadly, these seem to be the weak points of our trucks.

I know this comment is going to piss a lot of you people off but i tell it like it is. First have you ever taken a look at the first and second gens dak suspention. I'm not saying this because I own one, but all I have to say is extra heavy duty. The stock ball joints are 3/4 ton units! The rotors and the calipers, same thing. Know if you look at all the 3gen underpinnings, a little shaky. Everything looks light duty. And the truck averages 400 lbs more then the second gen dak.
I was going to buy one in 98, then I worked on one. Talk about changing my mind in a sacond. So John s I can tell this, fix the problem and use your best judgement and do what you must. good luck..

Thanks for the reply. I would agree with your comment on the older Dakotas being more built. My friend has an '89 Dakota 4x4 that we plow with, take way way into the woods, haul with, ect ect and it has never missed a beat, and that has 140K miles on it. This is why I am upset with my truck, its in mint shape and only has 57K miles on it and this happens, and apparently its very common. Doesnt make me very happy.

I wasn't happy with the outcome of all that I have spent on this truck since I bought it. I bought the truck used in January of this year and 2 weeks later the upper ball joints are bad. This truck supposedly went through a 5 Star safety check...yeah right. Tried getting the dealer to pay for some of the parts....YEAH RIGHT!

John, I wasn't trying to be a $hithead here. Basically since I have bought this truck I have spent more money in repairs than I have paying the payments on it for the first 3 months. Will it ever end?

Mark I didnt take any offense to what you posted, sorry if I came across as if I had.

I had to order the part today, Advance Auto Parts, 3-5 day wait!! $45 part. Im basically without a ride until next week, so much for the weekend of boating, I dont have another way to tow, unless I borrow the girlfriends tracker- but I think I will pass.

Thanks guys.

Well changing the tie rod is easy, but you have to get it alighned afterward, you might want to check the other side also, lift up the wheel and grab the tire from both sides and if you can move it in and out real esay the tie rod is going bad.

98flame, But the truck still looks Good though!

I already have the broken tie rod off the truck, took me 20 minutes to do this, while the wheel was off I checked the ball joints top and lower and they seem very very tight (knock on wood).

Thanks for the help though! I marked where the nut was originally, so im hoping i can get away without an alignment.

Ball joint should have never passed a

the only problem we seem to be having with our genI daks is the CV boot, seems to be a general problem on the genI thread, but other than that i havent had any problems with stearing

John, non taken.

Glad everything worked out for you. I would still have your tires aligned....cheaper to have an alignment done than new tires.

I have one of the lucky ones i guess. I bought a 97 cc 5.2 4x2 new in 97. I have 114 miles of highway, trails, tons of rock hauling, and the only thing wrong with it was the fuel pump at 65K. I now am replacing the Upper control arm bushings and the inner tie rod end at the rack. It's the best truck I have ever owned and I have owned a few. Good luck and don't but overpriced crappy parts from the dealer.(except the brake pads).

Just to clarify a few things i saw in these postings. First, do moog ball joints have a lifetime warranty if i install them myself, getting them from rockauto.com? Second, where do you guys get a arm bushings? Does moog make these too? Thanks
