Subject: Simple(stupid) waxing question. IP: Logged
Message: I've got white marks from wax on my black trim ( ie:door handles, base of windshield). What is the best way of getting this off? It's probably something simple and I feel stupid for asking, but I'm curious to see what a variety of techniques I will get in response.

on all the vinyl and plastic parts of my truck.

Message: any of the trim products on the market will cover up the wax haze, not remove it. Try using SMALL amounts of paint thinner (or mineral spirits) on a rag and rubbing the black areas with it. Don't soak the rag so it is dripping, just dampen a small area of the rag and use your finger behind it to control where you rub it. When finished, then use any of the black trim products, like the one Lesley mentioned above. BE CAREFUL if you try this since paint thinner will remove any wax on the vehicle too. You will have too wait for the paint thinner to dry/evaporate to see if it worked. If not, try lacquer thinner, but like the paint thinner, BE CAREFUL, and follow the same instructions.
Another trick I have heard of is applying the trim product to the trim first, then wax. If you get any wax on the trim it should come off real easy. Good luck.

Message: Everybody says there embarrased to ask a stupid question. If your trying to get some honest info and don't know the answer there's nothing stupid about it. I was probably driving trucks 20 years before most of you guys and gals were born but I still learn lots reading the posts on this board. I've asked plenty of questions here in the last 10 months but I never thought any were stupid although some may have thought so. If you dont know something, ask someone who does. Some of the folks on this board are amazing in what they know about engines. As for the wax on the trim, I use simonize spray tire cleaner and it works good. jmho

Message: For future reference, I take an extra half hour before i wax, and masking tape the door handles and trim. Looks like your getting ready to paint it or something. Takes a little time on the front end, but you don't have to be so cautious while waxing, and comes right off when your done.

Message: Use Mothers Back to Black, it will take the wax right off (not cover it up) plus the trim will look like brand new. IMHO, this is the best product on the market

So do you use a toothbrush with the PB or just your finger? Creamy or Chuncky I got both?
Maybe I should use a pc of bread and just have a sandwich afterwards!

Use Mothers Back to Black before waxing and after, if you need it. Works great.
Hey Lewndi,
I know I'm not as old as you but I started driving a Ford 150 w/the 390 engine in 1969. That truck was a handfull for a 16 year old.

Sure wish we could get some of the good ole days back. I turned 16 in 1962 and my Dad taught me to drive his 1961 Chev pickup. It was a 6 cylinder with 3 on the tree but it seemed huge back then. I got out of the Canadian Navy in 66 and bought myself a 61 Chevy Corvair. I figured I was on top of the world with that baby LOL.

Message: First: Thanks for the responses.
Second: There's no such thing as a stupid question.
You will stay stupid if you don't ask any though.
Third: I tried the Windex(worked well)and the Peanut Butter(worked ,but not as well. It was just plain weird putting it on too.) I'll shop for the Mother's Back to Black next time. I used a toothbrush to apply both. Then ran some Armor-All over the areas. My guess was that the oils in the P-B was the necessary component so I tried veggie oil on a spot and it worked as well. Nice water beading afterwards too.

Message: I tried Mother's Back to Black on the weekend,
works perfectly!
My truck is black, so I also keep a bottle of
Turtle Wax Magic color wax to hide the scratches.
It works great up inside the wheel wells.
