Message: If you are looking for an easy OEM style install; then Amsoil's dual bypass is the way to go. There are better systems on the market but they would not be practical for use on our trucks due to space. Their are alot of filtration systems designed for commercial equipment. I think you would be hard pressed to find a better system then Amsoil's for the money and ease of installation.

Message: If you are changeing your oil every 3000-5000 miles I would not worry about it too much. I would use one of the following filters: Mobile 1, Purolator Pure One, Baldwin B34, Hasting or Napa Gold. I am currently useing Baldwin B34. I honestly feel that it is as good as the Mobile 1 filter but they are only $4.00 and the Mobile 1 is 10.00. The Amsoil spin on single pass full flow is $12.00.

Depends on the oil you are using. Dino or Synthetic?
I was told by Champion Labs that the Mobil filter is now a cellulose/synthetic blend.
I wonder why that changed recently, because I'm pretty sure it originally started out as a full synthetic media.
For all of you that use the M1 filter. Liquidation price for just $1.99 at Kmart! Kmarts are getting rid of them in their going out of business sales. Maybe that's why Kmart lost over $1.5 billion in the last quarter.
P.S.
Mobil has "reformulated" (read "cost-engineered") a lot of their products since the merger (Exxon rules the board room now) to compete on the "Walmart type" shelves. A lot of guys on this forum quote a Filter Study that was performed pre re-engineered.

That's the biggest misconception there is. Dino or Synthetic oil does not require a special filter at all.

I bought my truck two weeks ago, and I crawled under my truck this past weekend for the first time. I cant believe Gunther and his pals at DC expect my and my cousin Cletus at Wal-mart to put our sticks through that little hole after we take out the little cover that is bound to eject itself after 10-15k miles, just to remove a filter that is on a +- 30 degree angle and spill oil all over that cute little catch basin that the aforementioned cover resides on! What happened to that famous "German Engineering" we've all heard so much about? What a Joke!

Message: Gasguzzler,
Let me post this without sounding like a commercial.
You have options mounting By-Pass. Maybe Bernd or Sandman or somebody else with a lot of By-Pass experience can help, and will tell you how to mount it best on a Dakota (System Mount, Frame Mount, maybe hood mount). A By-Pass Filter operates by filtering oil on a "partial-flow" basis. It draws a certain percentage of the oil at any one time and traps the extremely small, wear-causing contaminants and water that full-flow filters can’t remove (or don't remove very well). The By-Pass Filter typically filters all the oil in the system several times an hour, so the engine continuously receives analytically clean oil.
As far as Dr. D. and his comment about 25x better, I think he means "trapping" particles 1/25th the size of the "trapping capabilities" of conventional filters. You have to start with a base line of 100, and if you do that his interpretation is not correct. I appreciate his comments however, and the fact that he strongly believes in what he uses. I read one of his comments last week . I think he is an ex-Air Force or ex-Navy guy that worked on Helicopters and military jets (everything from tires to engines) so he is probably pretty knowledgeable.
Thank You,
Steven Roark

A lot of discussion has been generated on these forum boards as to what is the best oil filter.
Prices vary from $2 to $18 depending on the filter. Micron ratings vary also from 20 to 40, give or take (some even better - that is the average). Also most premimum filters have a bypass valve that opens under certain conditions, which in turn just allows the dirt to flow thru.
Now, one solution (as you have enquired) is to install a remote mounted bypass filter. The advantages are that most of them will increase the engine oil capacity by at least 1 quart of oil (better protection), and it has no bypass valve. (Note) Installation of a by-pass system usually does not affect oil pressure. Some can even remove condensation depending on the filter media used. You also have the added benefit of extending your oil drains with proper oil analysis.
BTW: When you sell the vehicle you can remove the unit and install it on your new vehicle. With the price of the unit and the price of oil this is an option to consider.
Some people do not like bypass oil filters, just as some don't like synthetic oil. And that is what makes the world great, like a--holes we can all have an opinion, but remember to respect each others opinion even though you may disagree.

Misinformation about AMSOIL Super Duty Filters
Q. I was told that AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filters are inferior to "Wix (Napa) filters that costs half the price!" Is there any truth to this?
A. In regard to AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filters being inferior to Wix (NAPA) filters based upon visual inspection, AMSOIL Filters have an inner beauty that's not visible to the human eye. Unlike the person who made these comments, the Society of Automotive Engineers recognized that filter performance cannot be evaluated by visual inspection. Therefore, they created the industry standard SAE HS806 test for evaluating oil filters. The SAE HS806 test evaluates particle removal efficiency and contaminant holding capacity which are the two main functions an oil filter must perform. AMSOIL outperforms the competition in both areas.
The Amsoil Super Duty Filter has a finer filtering media, more dirt holding capacity, heavier-duty construction and a 6-month/12,500-mile change interval recommendation which is the highest in the industry. Change a Wix (NAPA) filter two to three times as often at half the price and it will cost more. There will also be more and larger particles of dirt in your oil at all times if you don't choose the AMSOIL Super Duty.
If you find this interesting ... GREAT!
And if you don't ... That is Okay too.

Well I'm Back. Been Up to Alaska for a while.
With my extended intervals, I figured I should have a filter that is built a little better; with media that can withstand many hot/cold cycles(I travel from Arizona to Alaska); and with a canister that is strong.
I "HAD" decided that the K&N oil filter definitely fit the bill! Champion Labs makes great filters (K&N included), and this was the only one sold in Canada anyways. It's usually on sale for $14 (about $9 US) at Canadian Tire every month or so. It appears to filter about the same as the Purolator Premium Plus,(about a 15-20 micron filter) but "I was under the impression" it would flow a lot more oil! K&N says that they'll flow between 12-16gpm depending on filter size. The Purolators only flow 3-5gpm. I thought it would be a great filter for cold weather too, when the oil is very thick and causes the filters to stay in bypass mode way longer.
My dilema. I just got off the phone with Champion Labs (again), and I think I finally got some good (bad)info from a real car guy. He described the K&N's as "speciality racing" filters, and stated that all their OEM filters are flow bench tested at 3gpm but all will flow "quite a bit" more than that without going into bypass. He said that he had no specific numbers for the Mobil 1's or the K&N's but that the K&N claim of 12-16gpm is "THEIR OWN" and not that of Champion Labs. Red Flag?
I often change my mind about what oil filter I should run (which is why there are so many different filters in my closet) and now Ive changed my mind again.
He also said that the K&N filters down to 18 microns and the Mobil 1 to 10 microns, and that any of these filters should only go into bypass when used for long drain intervals "over 5000 miles" as the media becomes more restricted, even in high reving motors.
His personal car is a turbocharged Firebird and he runs the Mobil 1 (oil and filter), and Amsoil (oil and filter) in his wife's truck (her preference).
*** This is from the Guy at Champion !!! ***
So, bottom line for me is: I'll be using just the Mobil 1's now since I can buy them local. Sorry K&N.

Message: Gee Guy's Hastings (Baldwin) Manufactures the AMSOIL filter. Any one of the three are exactly the same. Question is...how much do you want to pay? Champ labs builds filters for vitually everyone else. (not all of them,VIRTUALLY)
Fram is VERY over rated at every level. Double guard, tough guard etc. Don't beleive me? cut one open. Then cut open a STP, Casite, NAPA Silver (etc) they are all "just alike" on the inside. I know I'm going to get some flack about media paper (etc) but I've sold the stuff for 30+ years, and I know a little bit about filters and filtration. Oh by the way, our parts stores sell Fram because....thats what our customer asks for. Certainly not beacuse they are the "best".....
