Subject: Truck Engine FIRE!! IP: Logged
Message: Yes it was literally on fire. Well after I installed the aftermarket Mopar Valve Covers and I got a moroso PCV oil baffle (still allows oil into the intake manifold, 1qt to 300 miles) I made up an oil breather that tried not to allow oil to be blown onto the outside of the engine. Well, that worked for a little bit and it worked well, till the gasket broke, then oil was all over the engine block once again. Mind you I was in the middle of my typical NJ-FL trip. Well after doing a "well thought out trail fix" I was back on the road. I took an old PCV and placed it in where the oil breather once was. The intent was to get my to FL where I could have time to fix it properly. Well, after another 300 miles to a tank of gas, I pulled into a Chevron station near "South of the Border" in South Carloina. I popped open the hood while I waited for a customer to finish pumping his gas. And there it was, in all it's glory, a FIRE! It was burning the plug wire insulators on the #5 & #7. I quickly grabbed my extinguisher........squeezed the handle.......NOTHING! Crap, ran inside and grabbed one from the lady behind the counter. Squeezed.....NOTHING! AAAARRGGHHH!! Yes, it was empty also, so I went back inside and got a water pot and filled it with enough to douse the roaring flames that were about to have my engine for lunch. Well, the fire was put out, and it didn't even burn my plug wires, just the insulators. Gassed up and pressed on......
WHY ME!!!!
I love this truck so much and try to take good care of it. This time it was my fault, and maybe I should rethink those trail fixes and I come up with....
