My Ranger at 107K had provided 5 years of faithful service. But having no air, no interior storage space, 2 wheel drive, and space for no more than 2 people was getting a little old.

My next vehicle HAD to be a truck, I'll never buy anything else. I wasn't willing to wait another year to see Ford to build me a nice, big 4 door Ranger. The four foot bed on the Sport trac is a bad joke. Dakota seems to have the biggest bed of all the compacts except Nissan frontier longbed and definitely more power than anything else in its class.

For my budget and price range there were two choices. I could get one of the stripped full sized extended cabs, with manual windows and locks, a rather cramped rear bench, and possibly even have to settle for V6. Or I could get nicely equipped V8 Dakota Quad cab with V8,4x4,cruise, tild, and a very comfy backseat for long trips.

Yes, just as most other trucks Ive heard of problems with the Daks. But it fit my needs so well I was willing to take a chance. Worse that happens, 3-5 years from now, if the repair bills get unacceptable a next generation F-series should be well within my budget by then. But hopefully, as with my Ranger, I got one of the mechanically good ones that will give me at minimum 6-7 years and 120 thousand miles without too much trouble.

bought my 01 quad cab because I had purchased a new 88 dak (my son is still driving it) and at 200+k it broke down on me for the first time. I had it towed to the dodge dealer where I was told it was fatal. So I bought the quad off the lot. After towing the 88 home I discovered it only had a blown head gasket. My son and I had it running over a weekend. Not only did the lie the dealer told me torgue my bolt, but the quad cab already needs new ball joints with only 21k on it. I don't think this one is going to last 16 years.
