Subject: Any TSBs or recalls on paint for a 98? IP: Logged
Message: Hey guys,
My 98 Dak 4x4 has rust spots appearing under each of the door windows below the trim. Does anyone know if there are recalls for this? I can't believe its a 98 and rusting. There are any scrathces, it is coming through the paint itself. Thanks in advance. Tim

Message: I've heard that there's a TSB on that but I don't remember where from -- and I know last I checked that it doesn't show up in a search on Edmund's.
my '98 SLT started that on the driver's side and now both sides are doing it. right at the trailing edges under the rubber. deep canyon red club cab 4x4, for what it's worth.
I've got a/c trouble (looks like a dead clutch) and a growl in the rearend (I've been told it's the bearings but that doesn't seem right), so it's going in anyway, and I'm going to ask about that rust. the guy I made my appointment with said I'd need to talk to the general service manager about the rust, so it seems to me like there's something to it.
the truck isn't going in 'till tuesday, but I'm going to stop by pricing a bumper tomorrow so I'll see if I can remember to ask.

Message: Well, at least I know it could be a common problem now, I will try stopping by a Dodge dealer and see what they say and post it here. Thanks for your information, if you find anything out, can you post it here? Thanks again.

Message: well I just got back from my dealer. the guy I talked to doesn't know anything about any TSBs on those trim pieces. they are not covered under the rust warranty since they're a trim piece. according to the guy I talked to they run about $40 apiece to replace, though I didn't check that price with parts.
hth,

Message: I have the same problem with my 99 Dak. Just below the drivers and passengers side window, there is a rubber coated peice of metal that is starting to rust underneath the rubber. You can see it starting to bubble up from the inside.
I have been to both of my local dealers and they have both told me the same thing. Not under warranty!
I have checked the prices of theses trim peices with parts and they each told me $56.00. That is here in Canada. I am not sure about in the US.
Either way, I don't think that it should be rusting this quick. Mine is a 99.
Oh well. I'll just bend over again and take it up the ying yang!

Message: Hmmm, we maybe talking about something different then. My trim piece is not rusting, the actual door is under the trim. It might be caused by the trim rusting where I can't see it though. I will have a local dealer look at it. Thanks. Tim

Message: tim-
what's rusting on mine is the trim piece. there is a rubber coated piece of steel that holds the window edging on the top outside of the door, and it seems the rubber split and allowed water to invade, rusting the steel under the rubber. this results in the black rubber bubbling and the edge of the trim piece to begin to peel and show the rust. that's what I'm talking about and what BLeagues definitely seems to be talking about.
hope that clears things up. if it's actually the door itself rusting you probably are in good shape (or at least slightly better) WRT making a claim to DC on it.
good luck!
