Subject: My A/C smells like $hit - Help! IP: Logged
Message: I have a bad odor problem with my Dakota's A/C... it smells like the bathroom at a ball game... every summer the smell just about kills me. The dealership cleaned it 2x and then changed the evaporator core and did an ozone treatment last summer (all under warranty). I bought the truck used so I have no idea what the previous owner did to it... The truck is now out of warranty and the smell is back. I can't think of anything to do to fix this short of changing out the whole heater box under the dash and then recharging the A/C...
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, what did you do about it?

Message: Sup dude:
I remember reading something about this a long time ago on this site. Check the drain tube for the a/c. I don't remember where it is, but I remember the post saying that it gets clogged easily. You might want to do it quickly beacuse I think that it can damage some things *seriously* if you don't. Good luck!

Message: nuckenfuts, it's just a really nasty A/C smell that has a resemblence to urine at times... I don't really think there is actual sewage in there though... LOL
As far as the drain goes, it drains through the hole in the firewall as it should... maybe I'll get a pipe cleaner and cram it in there and see what I pull out...
My wife works in climate control engineering for an OEM (not Dodge) and says that sometimes the foam seals and gaskets can grow bacteria/fungus that smells when it is damp (like after the A/C is used) and there is really no way to make it stop short of replacing the whole heater case. The dealership replaced the evap core late last August and the problem came back this year. I really think it's something with the seals...
Any Dodge Tech's out there that would like to take a crack at this?
Thanks.

Message: I notice my a/c smells a bit "stale" when it has been running for a while and I turn it from the Max a/c back to normal a/c. My truck sizzles after I turn it off after using the a/c. It sounds like the condensed water is draining onto the exhaust somewhere. At least I know it's draining.

Message: I have heard of spraying Lysol or a bacterial killing spray into the a/c air intake to kill the bacteria that has built up in the system from the condensation. I have never tried it but I heard it works well.

Message: Mine get this smell too. I've tried turning off the AC and runniing on just blower for a while before shutting down, but the smell is still there. Where exactly is the drain that is supposed to be checked?? I"m going under the hood tomorrow afternoon and see if I can find the source of the odor. Wondering if my dealer will actually do something about this under warranty....

Message: Yes, if the truck is under warranty, the dealership will do 'something' about it... will it fix it? Not in my experince.
Maybe you'll have better luck.
I have tried the A/C spray cleaners that are sold at the auto parts stores and I have not had any luck. I am going to try the lysol thing here soon and if that doesn't work I will probably put chlorine bleach and water is a spray bottle and spray it into the air intake (recirc and fresh air)with the A/C running and on Hi.

Message: There was a post a few days ago about this. There is a company called B.G. they make great automotive fluids and one of the best shops in the area only uses these. Anyway they make something called frigi-clean. I would try this first. You can contact them and they can tell you who in your area sells their product or where you can go to get the A.C. cleaning

Message: My dealer said,
only use max A/C at first, then switch to reg A/C, (gets a certain % of outside air)
I also turn off the compressor(A/C switch) and run the fan on full thermostat to dry the system out for a few minutes before shut down, this takes care of it. Really.
It's cause some of the liquid in the system/gaskets etc., gets bac/fungi. It doesn't all come of the tube in the firewall. It's a must that this is flowing though, or it really compounds things.

Message: First make sure the drain tube is clear. It's on the passenger side of the firewall. Next find a way into the heater box. Try taking the glove box out nd see of you can disconnect one of the vent hoses. Get some good disenfectant in there to clean out any thing that might be living in there. Flush it out with a SLOWLY running garden hose to make sure the drian runs freely. Biggest cause is the drian tube closing ou and not allowing the ac condensate to drain properly.

Message: Ron,
The drain tube, is at the end of the drain. J/K
It's on the passinger side, coming out of the firewall, right behind the right (passenger header).
It's short, and it's horizontal, I guess DC didn't want to spend the extra 2cents to turn it down. Look good, or you'll miss it.
Hope this helps, mine smelled back and it wasn't clogged. Now that I take it off Max A/C after a short time, it doesn't smell. Ge figure, when the shop manager told me this, I thought he was FOS.

Message: I second Nitro Junkie. It is a new product out called frigi clean and its an A/c bacterial killer. Thats what makes the nasty smells from your a/c. Remember Moisture plus temperature(60-120, which would be after running your a.c and parking it) is a breeding ground for Bacteria. The cleaner you spray into your A/C intake under the hood and kills most of the germs and bacteria. Try it! it works

Message: I've looked and looked. Used a mirror. Looked by the exaust manifold on the passenger side. Crawled under and looked. I'll be damn if i can find the drain tube. Looked on my 01 Jeep Grand Cherokee and it is there. But on the 01 Dak...one of lifes little mysteries. And by the way, the Jeep drips condensation when the A/C is used, the Dak dosen't. Where is it going???
