Subject: tonneau cover?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 02 Dakota Sport club cab. I would like to know what kind of cover to get? Do I get the one with buttons, velcro, or some other kind? What is a good maker? Does LeBra make a good one?

Thanks!

I wanna go with the roll n lock type. A bit pricey but very usable with a locking tail gate you can lock the top as well and it's all secure.

I had one of those snap type, what a pain in the @ss, especially in the winter, if something was to slide to the front, you either crawled under the thing or you removed the buttons and struggled to put them back on. I'll never do that again.

But for a budget top they do work.

Matt - I went through the same comparisons that you are going through. I ended up getting a snap cover from SPORTMASTERS. Very nice cover. I was worried about the snaps in the winter and all that too. The one I have has spacers that adjust for tightness differences between winter and summer. I have had no problems thus far. It IS a little tougher to resnap in the winter due to the vinyl not being as pliable but this goes for the snapless covers too. I have talked to many dealers and they ALL recommend a snap cover over the snapless dues to the fact that it's harder to get the snapless ones back on during the winter months. The SportMasters cover also has adjustable snaps that tighten down in place so that's a very nice feature. If something slides to the front near the cab, then simply undo 3 or 4 snaps in the corner and then it's not hard to resnap at all. You only run into problems when you unhook most of the snaps or undo one whole side. Only then do you get into a tug of war to restretch the cover back on. But if you only undo two snaps or so from adjacent sides to open up a corner, then it's really easy to resnap since you still have tension on the rest of the cover. Snap covers aren't as bad as most people make them out to be. Extang may be a bit more work because the snaps slide on the rails but when you have them tightend down like the SportMasters has, then it's really easy.

If ya got the money then a roll n lock are really nice too. only one problem with those though. you lose about a foot of bed space near the cab.

Clevite 77,

I bought a hard fiberglass cover from Sal in the classified ads. He has another cover listed in the classified ads in Eagle Pass Texas. Its the roll type. I have personally seen it in his storage unit while I was picking up mine. He will give you a good price if he still has it. Just tell him Peter sent you.

I have had the LeBra soft tonneau on my Dakota for about 7 months. It still looks brand new. I can't remember what I paid for it, but I ordered it from Advanced Auto Parts. I originally did not want a cover with snaps, but am glad I got it. It looks really good on mine. Anyway, hope this helps.

I have the "Access Cover" soft cover. It is great. It has the bars built in and can be rolled up from either side. All the metal parts are black annodized. They even gave me a taigate lock for free.

I just got a black soft cover for my 98 CC, made by a company called TekStyle. So far I am happy with it. Not to mention I found it used on Ebay for 120 bucks, including shipping. The person who had it before me had it on his truck for 6 months and I figured it would be in fair shape.

When I opened the box, the cover was in much better shape than I had thought. Perfect flawless condition. Got it on my truck and love it.

If you check around Ebay..you will see Extangs starting around 125...you might want to check Ebay out before going to a local shop...you never know what you might find.

I've got an Extang Sabre Snapless tonneau and I love it. I got it because I wanted the smooth and seamless look. It seals up like a Tupperware lid! =)

Sport master makes great covers. Had one on my 97 for 2 years. I live in Forida. The land known for heavy rains and I travel a lot on I-75. NEVER had water under the cover.
