Subject: Getting Line X - Questions for installer IP: Logged
Message: After reading lots of posts on this board and doing some other research, I've decided to go with Line X. One of the key points discussed previously was that the installer was probably more important than the product itself. So I turn to the Dakota nation for advice on what questions I should ask my local installer (Bedliners Plus - Irvine, CA) prior to plunking down the cash. Also, I'm leaning towards over the rail... Pro's / Con's on over or under the rail???

Message: Obviously the pros of having an over-the-rail bedliner installation are that the rails will be protected. I was somewhat worried that it might interfere with installation of a tonneau cover or a camper shell, but after talking with the techs for a Saddleman cover, they said that at the very WORST, all that might happen is a small bit of leakage, since the Line-X liner is not totally flat....however, I don't suspect even that will happen as long as the camper top/tonneau cover is on good and tight, with a good rubber seal. Even so, the Line-X liner is waterproof, so I'm not worried about that, plus the bed has drains. The drains get a bit smaller with the Line-X liner installed, but they're still there and work sufficiently.
As far as what installer to go with, I would either ask to see samples of jobs he has done himself, or ask around to find people who have had jobs done by him. I got mine lined in January of this year, and am extremely pleased with the job. There are a few white spots, and I'm not sure if it is due to something done during the installation, or due to rain or something; but they're just very faint white spots, and in any event, the installer is bound by the contract to fix them since the liner comes with a lifetime warranty. Just make sure that he honors the warranty and you should be set. I got mine installed for $380 over the rail...I've heard as cheap as about $320 over the rail. Check to see if they have deals going.

Message: Line-x is a good choice (very good) I have it over the rails. no cons for that I think it looks good over the rails too. the guy asked me how far down the bed I wanna go, while I was deciding, he told me he usually goes down to right about here and he pointed out on a demo that he recently did for display.
for the edge, (if you were wondering) the guy used a piece of tape with wire in it when done spraying he peels the wire up and it cuts a nice perfect line. It looks great.
If you plan on using the bedliner I say go over the rails,

Message: Thanks for the great feedback. One follow up question, probably trivial. I have the choice of dropping it off or waiting while they do the work. On a similar post someone said they were glad they were in the shop. Do I really need to spend two hours standing over their shoulder? This is there livelihood after all.

Message: if you don't wanna wait, then don't. But on the other hand, I waited and it was cool to see how they did the whole thing.

Message: I did the same....plus if you're not sure the guy is totally reputable, it helps out...but I think you'll find most of them are good to go.

Message: I stayed around to watch my truck get line-x'ed, and it was pretty cool to watch, except for the part where they took my week old truck and scratched the heck out of the bed with the sander to prep the bed for the material... that part was a little painful to watch, so if you have a weak heart and are really attached to the truck, you may wanna turn away for a few minutes while they prep the bed!

Message: The selling feture for me was that, as I went in to drop off the truck, the dealer was talking to another customer who was having his 3rd liner but on to his 3rd truck. The customer was saying how on his second truck they dropped an oil well drill bit on to the bed by accident and left a HUGE dent in the bed, yet the line-x did not break through. The dealer quickly picked up on that and said that the liner will stretch to 200% its original length. 200%!!! If you ask me, thats selling feture enough if your bed gets dents and dings and you dont want the liner to tear.

Message: Well, you talked me into it. I had an appointment to drop it off at noon today but they let me change it to a "wait" appointment at 12:30, so I'll be able to hang around while they do it. The guys sound like they know what they are doing and there are always 2-3 different trucks in front of the place whenever I drive by... Thanks again for all your feedback!

Message: By the way, they quoted $390 over the rail after the $25 coupon on their website.

Message: That sounds about right. Some people have gotten about $50 cheaper or so, but the standard is right around there. Even if it costs $390, it was $390 that I have not missed once. I moved not 3 days after it was sprayed in, and I threw ALL sorts of stuff in there - I mean bricks, metal plates, furniture, etc. I got ONE SCRATCH, and a small one at that, and they gladly repaired it for me. Ya can't beat that with a bat. When Line-X says lifetime warranty, they mean it, and it's good at ANY Line-X dealer.

Message: Kirkland, WA is the closest Line-X installer - they quote right around $500 for over-the-rail!
That seems to be the Pacific Northwest Rip in general.
