Message: The shift light on my 2001 4.7 5 speed has never lit up. Is it possible that it is somehow disabled or do I need to take it in to have it fixed?

Message: I'm fine with it not lighting up because I have been driving standards for years. My wife is learning how to drive a standard. I think it might be nice for her. I don't think it would annoy me because most of my other vehicles had dummy lights. Thanks. I was just wondering if there was a way to enable it without having to take it in.

CyberWolf tell your wife to shift at a certain point in the rpm range (ie:2500rpm) until she gets the hang of things. That's the way I figured it out for myself. I think the shift light would come on at 3000 rpm's.

Message: If you do find out why it's not working, please post the cause so the rest of us can use the information to disable the damn thing. I don't want to tear into the dash to get to the bulb if I don't have to...
I think you'll find that it's more annoying than a regular 'idiot' light, because it's constantly flickering on and off. You see it in your peripheral vision and it get's your attention so you're constantly looking down at your dash, thinking there's something meaningful there, whereas it's actually just some "idiot's" idea of when you should shift.

Message: Mine lights up over 1500 rpm whenever I hold it at a constant rpm above that point. As soon as I start to accelerate it goes away. Then it comes on and stays on at 3500. I agree it is very annoying.

Message: THe shift light is a good thing. Anyone can drive a standard without looking at the stupid light. But the light is a excellent refrence on how to get the best fuel economy.

| UPSHIFT LIGHT IS PROGRAMMABLE IP: Logged
Message: According to the 2000 dakota shop manual, the upshift light is normally only "enabled" when fitted with the 4-cylinder engine.
However, a knowledgable service department should be able to re-program the onboard computer to "enable" the upshift light on any dakota.

Message: When looking at the gauge cluster you should be able to see a little triangle below the 3,000 mark on the RPM gauge. Which of course this is your shift light. My cluster didn't come with the little triangle, I'm not complaining I'm thankful.
So re-programming the computer would do nothing if you have the same gauge cluster as mine...

Message: The thing I hate about that light is that it doesn't dim with everything else at night, so I cannot ignore it. I briefly tried shifting by light when it was new to improve my mileage; following it means you either floor it or go very slow! When I put in the NR Auto black-on-white guage decals I have a piece of black plastic or construction paper with its name on it. Afraid to pull the bulb - recall the owner's manual or something read that if the instrument panel has any problems it should be fixed immediately because the airbag uses its circuitry. Haven't confirmed with the shop manual.

Message: Bruce P Is somewhat correct, The 4.7 has the shift light but it doesn't work . The 6 and 4 are wired for it. The shift light is only there to guide on when to shift, but I have heard of reports that using the shift light doesn't give any better gas mileage.

Message: I have a 2004 Dakota and mine does not light up either. Brought it into the dealership and they said it has to do with the Cali emssions control. If you have that it will light up, otherwise its set to stay off. Does anyone know how to turn it on myself; instead of going to the dealership and looking like a moron.

Message: To tell you the truth I forgot the dang thing was still there until you guys had to say somthing about it. No... Really though, it's just for fuel economy, not optimal shift regions. If you go a little past 3000rpms it turns bach off again because it knows that your going to ignore it at that point. What would be nice is if you can hook it up like a performance tach with the programmable shift light, to tell you to shift at 5200rpms.

Message: Shift at 5200? I don't need a dyno to know I'm still making good power past that point!
Reputable sources on this forum, have said that: I think it was 2001, that the shift light mode was programmed out of the PCM, and it only comes on at the start up light test. Apparently it was too confusing, and causing problems, etc. So they did away with it. It will come on at the start up, panel light check however.
