Hello all-

I have just discovered this site, and am looking for some advice. I have 96' 4x4 5.2L, that i use for a lot of towing for camping and pulling my boat. It has 57K miles and i am looking to add some HP & torque to it.

What are some economical upgrades?

I have just added the K&N air filter so far, everything else is stock.

please Help,

bill

heh....economical upgrages....that's almost an oxymoron!! 8^)

There really aren't too many cheap things that we do to our Dakotas, but I'll give it a try:

1.) Make sure the ignition system is up to snuff. Get new cap & rotor, spark plugs & spark plug wires. There are several favored brands (among the Dakota & Durango crowds) for each item. I went with Borg-Warner cap & rotor, Autolite 3923's, and MSD 8.5mm wires. This really isn't a performance upgrade persay, but you may pick up a little better idle & acceleration.

2.) Beings that you want "economical" upgrades, you could get a hi-flow muffler spliced in place of your stocker (which is highly restrictive). Not only will this help performance, but it will also give your Dakota a throatier sound. Favored brands range from FlowMaster to Spintech...with several in between.

After this, things will start getting a little more pricey. So here's my last couple of pointers.

1.) The two most basic principals of engine performance are to get gases in & out of the engine as quickly & efficiently as possible, and reduce friction wherever possible. Also remember that if you free up the intake side (like with the K&N drop-in), you will need to free up the exhaust side.

2.) Stay away from the "too good to be true" performance products. Throttle body spacers won't work with our Magnum engines. Tornado intake-air-propellors don't work PERIOD. And chips don't work too well with our computers (an alternative for this is to get a custom flash or a Mopar performance computer).

3.) Last, but not least. Stay away from people like me and boards like this. We will only serve to drain your bank account!! 8^)
