Just took delivery of my 01 SLT. Whats the general thought on rustproofing/undercoating. Is it worth having done. I've read articles that go both ways. Some say because of the metals being used today it's not necessary and others say it will help. Just looking for your opinions. Thanks

I read once that rust proofing is no good. After a while the rust proofing cracks allowing rock salt to get into the cracks a lay there to eat out your metal. Most manufacturers warrant your car or truck for 7 years on rusting anyway.

Well... personally, I have both of my vehicles "rustproofed" through Ziebart with a "lifetime" guarantee...

Where I am... the Winters are rough and the DOT drops some serious salt on the road to keep the ice from making driving impossible...

There are so many "rust buckets" out there that don't have rustproofing that it would be almost stupid not to do it... especially if you plan on keeping the vehicle rather than leasing or selling in 3 - 5 years.

Now if you don't live in areas that get regular snow... then you might be able to get by without it...

I have a 1986 Toyota 4runner that has survived here in michiagan with allmost no rust. The areas that I undercoated look just like new. The only place it has rusted is in front of rear wheel opening and that is from a stone chip in the paint. The under coating does for the underside of your truck what a spray in bed liner does for you bed. If you are going to undercoat you should either use a non hardening rubber fiber/ashphalt mix or sometin g like Texaco grease. If you live down south you will notice that alot of toyotas will ooze this greenish yellow stuff that has a consistence of snot. This is Texaco grease. It is also what places like Ziebart normaly use. Galvined steel and the ALPO(looks like semi-gloss black primer on new unpainted panels) coating that GM uses on their panels is only good as long as it stays on the pannel. If a stone hits it and chips throught to bare metal you will get rust. It is very hard to chip through undercoating because it stays flexable.

Well... depending on new vs. used status... it differs (also the warranty differs).

You may want to call you local Ziebart (or other "vehicle detailing/protection" detailer) to get a specific quote.

Personally, my rustproofing cost me around $329, but since it was part of a "package deal" I'm sure that was a discounted price...

Oh by the way... I forgot... if all you want is JUST the rustproofing... then it might be somewhat cheaper than that... maybe under $200...

However, since I wanted the "sound deadener" treatment too, that cost extra...

If you do it your self one to two gallons of rubberized under coating will do the whole vechile. All you need then is a brush. You can buy it at PEP Boys and other automotive parts stores. It is kind of silly to pay someone to do an under coating job for you. You realy should not need to spray between the pannels if this vechile is a newer one. The undercoating will deaden alot of raod noise.

I wouldn't get my vehicle rust proofed. Where I work, we rust proof them all the time (atleast 3 a day) but, as someone already stated, with the newer vehicles, rust isn't really that much of a problem being that they're making them better (in my opinion).

The only thing I would reccomend is to get it undercoated. Don't necesarilly do the whole underneath (rearend, diff, frame) just spray it on underneath the bed where salt and road grime collect -- the frame and all that other stuff is strong (in my opinion) and doesn't need it.

My previous truck was a 93 Ranger in which I undercoated the whole thing because trucks look nice when everything underneath is black -- on my 01, everything is black ... so what's the point -- when it gets discolored, maybe I'll do it then.

DO NOT DO IT

Here in Vermont they use copious amounts of road chloride to melt the snow.
If you read the rustproof warantee carefully, you will find it only gaurantees against RUST THROUGH. (HOLES IN METAL)

By the time even an UN-rustproofed car gets HOLES in it...it is well beyond any warantee.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS LIFETIME WARANTEE AGAINST RUST! Most of those companys will conviently go out of buisness before you can make a claim.

What about Rust Check?
After a vehicle has been undercoated, it is so nice to work on it because the nuts and bolts come apart much easier.

Well it has been a very harsh year here in the Northeast with lots of snow and therefore lots of salt on the roads. I've noticed rusting underneath my truck and wanted to bump this thread for advice. Speaking of BMac's prior post, has anyone ever tried to DIY on some areas of the truck with those aerosol cans of Rust Check or similar products? How do I clean it first? how do I prep before applying? Etc? Etc? Etc? i don't want to wait until next Winter before I start preventive action!

Amsoil MPHD Heavy Duty Metal Protector

Message:

Well, I live in NYC (Manhattan) and commute to New Jersey M-F, so I know your pain.

Personally, I spend my money on a truck wash, as I think keeping the truck clean in Winter helps keep rust from forming. If the salt is only on the truck for a short period of time before being washed away --- it doesn't have enough time to attack. Also, if your truck is parked outside, the extreme cold prevents the salt from attacking your vehicle, since you need heat and moisture in order for rust to form.

Amsoil MPHD Heavy Duty Metal Protector

I know a lot of guys that spray this on the rear differential of their trucks. HDMP is comes in an aerosol can that goes on wet and then dries to a wax like coating. My friends also have found creative ways of using it such as using it on their motorcycle chains.

Amsoil Quote:

A heavy duty spray lubricant fortified with special rust and corrosion inhibitors. Penetrates and adheres to metal surfaces, leaving a long lasting protective coating. Apply MPHD to any metal surface that requires a heavy duty lubricant or is exposed to the damaging effects of salt, moisture or chemical corrosion. Works as an undercoat, leaving a wax-like film. Recommended for motorcycle chains. Won't "sling" off. Dry to the touch. Doesn't attract dust. It is ideal for hinges, wire ropes and springs, nuts and bolts, motorcycle or bicycle chains, and for undercoating car doors, wheel wells, rocker panels, seams and other metal surfaces exposed to water, dirt or road salt. Product Code: AMH

-- Prevents rust & corrosion, even in salt water
-- Displaces water
-- Stops squeaks
-- Lubricates metal surfaces
-- Leaves a dry, long-lasting, wax-like film
-- Sprays into hard-to-reach places
-- Lubricant does not attract dust
-- Does not sling off
-- Ideal for chains & other heavy-use items

Even in Florida rustproofing is a very good idea.Just living near the salt water cars and trucks get a salt film on them.Regular washings are a must or you will get undercarraige rust and rust from pits in paint manly from the love bugs. These bugs have acid in there bodys that will eat through paint if not washed off

One area thats prone to rusting up a lot is a lip that runs along the bottom of the frame, under the doors from the back of the front wheel well to the front of the rear wheel well. On every dakota I've seen, it's an issue. My fix to it was to have Chipguard heavily applied to that area. The truck is two tone, blue and silver, I had Chipguard applied to the lower silver area around the truck, costed 400.00 for the body shop to do it. The Chipguard could be applied clear or mixed with paint to match color.

Up here in Canada, you most likely need some sort of rustproofing from the factory. I'm going to start having my Dak under oiled this year. Better then the rustproofing as the under oiling will creep into cracks, etc. as well as lubricate bushings, prevent electrical connection corostion and the such. The thing is that this has to be done every year, but well worth the $$ as your ride will live a lot longer and as someone said above, easier to work on when bolts aren't rusted to the parts.
