Hi
need to get under headliner in order to fix
wiring to sunroof motor. I have a 98 dakota, no
overhead console or panels that can be unscrewed.
What do I need to take off and in what order to
get the headliner off??

Don't want to budge in on your question, but wondering how to take the headliner off in a 96 Dakota? I also have a sunroof!

You need to remove:

The A-pillar covers
- Just pull them out starting from the top. There are 2 or 3 tabs which hold them in place. There's a small extension that goes down beside the dash so be careful not to break it.

The B-pillar covers
- You'll need a #47 torx head socket to remove the seat belt holders. Then just pop the cover out enough so you can get the headliner out.

The sunvisors
- A phillips screwdriver will remove the main portion of the visors. You'll then need a pair of pliers to remove the rod holders. The coat hangars will come out the same way. Click on the below picture to see the rod holders full size. The coat hangars operate on the same principle.

Now it's a simple matter of untucking the headliner from the rubber moulding on the sides. Be careful not to bend the headliner because it creases very easily.

Quick - yes it's the same.

And just to add to Intense's post there's a cover that hides the torx screws on the seatbelts, you just want to push up on them with a little bit of effort and they should come right off.

Also don't forget about the dome light, if I remember correctly the frame around the lens just pops off and the lens just snaps off. Then take out the 1 or 2 screws and disconnect the wiring.

thanks for the advice but I don't think I'm going to be able to get the headliner off. I think heat
has fused it to the roof of my truck because it does not want to come off easily.
Also, there must be some additional fastenings around the perimeter of the sunroof opening itself. Around the sunroof the headliner is tight tight to the roof and will not budge.
Has anyone with a sunroof, taken their headliner off successfully?
