Subject: AC Smell Problem??
IP: Logged

Message:
'01 Dakota, 4.7 auto, 7.5k miles. When I run the AC then shut down the vehicle, the next time I drive the truck I get a horrible odor from the AC vents-- smells like the underside of an old fishing dock. I do NOT see any H20 leaking inside the cab, but I do notice a fair amount of water dripping behind the right front wheel after the AC has been run for a while in +85 degree temps. Any ideas on how to prevent the smell??
Thanx,

DG

DG,

Had the same problem with my 89 Ford Van, check the drain for the A/C. If the water can't drain out then it gets a bad smell. I think moled builds up in there.

No big problem. That's the same drain location on mine and it sounds like it's draining ok. Don't forget that an AC unit is also a dehumidifier, hence, the drain. Mine used to smell like this also. What happens is, if you shut down the truck with the AC on the air ducts are still cold. Water condenses on the inside ( just like water droplets on a cold glass) and collect in the low spots in the system. The water sitting in a dark space with no air movement gets the musty smell. When you turn the AC on you smell it until the air flow evaporates it. Next time you go out turn the AC off a few miles before you get home and leave the fan running on high. You may even want to turn the heater on for a minute. This should heat/dry the ducting before you turn it off and the problem should go away.
Take care, Jim

There is a company called BG and they make all kinds of fluids (oil, fuel injector clean) they are a real nice quality product. They also make a product that shops use to do a AC clean to get rid of that smell !!!

Look for their website and they can tell you who in your area can perform that service.

Thanks, I'll try shtting down the AC before I park the vehicle and see if it makes a difference. Also will check the drain and make sure there is no mold or mildew in the box. The truck didn't do this last fall, so I want to get it taken care of asap. Thanks again,

DG

Did you check for water UNDER your pass. side carpet? My 02 had been doing the same and when I went to run my speaker wires under the carpet...WOW what a suprise... water everywhere!
You couldn`t tell because the top of the carpet was not even damp.I took off the heatshield and sealed the drain opening , so the water could no longer run out of the tube and back INTO my cab.I also put a small rubber turndown on the tube and replaced the heatshield and it seems that it is fixed. From what I`ve read , this seems to be a very common problem.
Hope this helps , I would ask everyone to check under the carpet and let me know if you have the same problem.

If the condensation is draining out under the truck like it should there is no excuse for a smelly A/C. You shouldn't have to run the vents "dry" or any other crap like that. I never turn my A/C off here in FL. Haven't had the smell yet and have never had a smelly A/C in any other vehicle.
