Subject: How to take off door panels IP: Logged
Message: Can anyone give me step by step instructions how to remove the 2 door panels on a 2000 dakota. I see 4 screws but Im sure there is more to it than that, Also I need to know how to remove the handles, and how to get to and remove the tailgate handel, Im haveing all of them painted and its alot cheaper if I remove them myself instead of having them remove them. These along with any other comments/warnings or things to watch for will be much appriciated.

Message: Hi, I just took off my door panels today. For mine there were only 2 screws in it ( I have an 87). But I'm sure if you take those 4 screws out, and then it should pop out, using a screwdriver, being carfull not to crack the panel, and it should come off. I'm not sure on how to take the door handles off, but look for hidden screws around the handle, maybe someone here knows exactly how to take those off. Not sure about tailgate handle either. Good luck!

Your '00 door panels should be the same as my '99. You didn't mention if you had manual windows or not, but it doesn't make too much difference.
The first thing you need to do (for manual windows) is to remove the window crank. There is an "E" clip which holds the crank on. They make a special tool whichs pops the clip off, but with a little patience you can pop it off using a sock or other piece of cloth. I had good luck with a sock.
Once you get the window crank off everything else is a piece of cake. Remove all visible screws including the one behind the door latch. After the screws are removed slide the panel up about an inch or so. This disengages the clips. Pull the door panel out enough to disengage the white clip which connects the door latch to the rod. If you have electric windows unplug the harness. And that's it ;-)
In looking at the FSM, the exterior door handles look relatively simple to remove. It's just a matter of removing a couple nuts and the rest of the linkage.
The tailgate latch might be a different story though. Here's what they have in the FSM:
1)Using a trim stick and starting at the bottom of the latch release handle, disengage the bottom clips attaching the bezel to the tailgate.
2)Slide the bezel downward to remove it from the tailgate.
3)Remove the screws attaching the latch release handle to tailgate.
4)Disengage latch release rods.
5)Seperate latch release from tailgate.

Message: I seem to remember a torx head screw near the inside door latch release in my '00 that needs to come out. Just start removing screws and gently pulling to see what else wants to stick.
