Subject: my truck broke, what's wrong? IP: Logged
Message: i have a 1990 dodge dakota 4-cyl 2.5 liter truck...std cab, 5 spd
i was driving the other night and shifted from 5th to second on accident, meant to shift into fourth.....
i let the clutch out, and tires barked, then i felt a strange thing happen. When i drove, it felt like something was sticking off the driveshaft and every time it went around it hit something. i got it home and havent moved it yet. I dont know what to do either.

Message: Do like Graphite said first. Grab the driveshaft and twist and shake to see if there is any excessive play in the rear or if a universal joint broke and by some miracle you didn't throw the d-shaft. Then if you still don't notice anything wrong jack the rear end off the ground and place jackstands under the rear differential of the truck next to each tire so the tires are about 3" off the ground making sure the rear wheels can spin freely. Make sure both rear tires are off the ground and your truck is stabile. Put a chock in front of one of the front tires to immobilize your truck. Next start your truck up and put it in first gear and let the clutch out with the engine at idle. Now get out of the truck and try to pinpoint where the noise is coming from with your drivetrain engaged. Don't put your truck in any other gear except reverse when trying this however, just 1st & reverse and don't give it any fuel.

Message: ...Forgot to say if you don't have jackstands take it to a garage with a lift and they'll do the same thing on the lift. Good Luck.

Message: i looked under my truck and there is not anything hanging off the driveshaft. i have looked and there is a spot on the shaft going out of the transmission connecting to the d-shaft. it looks like that has moved because it is greasy and looks like it has just happened, i dont know alot about the linkage and everything, but it looks like the drive shaft has been pulled back towards the rear end..... everything looks normal on the rear end though......i am having someone come look at it tomorrow though.....i might jack it up tomorrow too.

Message: I have a 97 dakota (3.6} and it keeps cutting out on me with I'm driving. It does this when it is idleing also. It never quits just cuts out and i have to slam the gas to get it to go. I have changed the plugs, wires, d cap, rotar button, and catylitic converter and it is still doing it. What else could this be? does anyone know

Message: I assume you mean the 3.9. How many miles, auto or standard. Like daddio said, get the codes pulled, then report back. It might be something as simple as your IAC, MAP, CPS or the HE coil in your distributor, or it could be the distributor bushings.
If it ain't broke, fix it til it is.

Message: I have two assumptions but not sure if i am correct or not.
I have a 98' Dodge Dakota Sport.
I am having a very tough time putting the gear into either 1st thru 5th and its even worse when putting into reverse.
It seems like my clutch is not pushed in all the way. There is too much grinding going on and especially it is hard to put it into gear.
I assume
1. My clutch
2. My transmission
Please help!

Message: @ Jourdan:
Is it like that when shifting from N to 1st? A constant-mesh gearbox is a transmission that allows the parts to move even when it neutral. So if it’s grinding a bit when shifting out of "N", then there's a possibility it could be the clutch- or it could be the synchronizers going out. I think Best to get it checked out at a reliable transmission repair shop.

Message: Like what Super.S and point said before the peanut galley joined in, I'd check your clutch hydaulic oil first, then your clutch. Unless every one of the sychro's decided to crap out at once, i'd bet the problem lies with the oil or the clutch.
