Subject: 2.5L , hard to find IP: Logged
Message: Greetings all
I traded a broken boat for a broken 91 Dakota
The engine was severely overheated, heads
cracked and enough piston movement to drive
a truck through.
So I called around the yards for a replacement
engine, none to be found. Anyone know why?
Or what other models car/truck had this
engine in them?
Thanks
Joe

Message: Do your self a favour and forget the 4 banger, they stink. drop in a nice 5.9L and call it good. By the way the reason you can't find any is because they didn't make very many. I don't think that there is anything else that used the same 2.5. Its not the same as the 2.5 FWD engine, and the Dodge D50 piece of crap used a Mitsubishi 2.6 All different.

Message: Joe, some of the newer, and late model Jeeps use the same 2.5L engine as the 2.5l dakota. I'm not sure exactly what years they started putting them into Jeeps but there are 2.5l jeeps out there. But I agree with DodgeNut22, put some muscle into that dak!

Message: Wrangler for sure.
BUT- im not sure if the Cherokee has the same engine- wasnt it a 2.7L? Or was that the old V6? Either way for sure its the Wragler- and maybe the cherokee engine as well.
Perhaps he cannot find many 2.5L 4 bangers is because they are all still running.

I have a '91 5 speed 4 banger with 200K+ miles on it and it still runs and looks like a Rolex. Very little trouble. Want to buy a new 2003 Dak just like it.

Message: Thanks for the info, on the 2.5L. One of the
yards I contacted had one. They also knew
what they had. They loved that engine so
much they raised the price so no one would
buy it. 1,000 dollars! I will look into
finding the 6 cylinder model.
Once again thanks for the info.

Message: Hey now, the D50 wasn't a piece (I actually had a Mitsubishi)... And the 2.6L was 'okay', the 2.0L was better... I had a 2.0L (same engine used in Mitsubishi Starion, minus the turbo).
If it wasn't for the D50, the Dakota wouldn't have happened (The Dakota was built as a replacement for the D50--- and after a few years, was.)

Message: Up until 96 the 2.5L in the daks was the same engine as the FWD cars. You'll have to find one with the bosses for a RWD application cast in the block. Forget what year they started this. Your engine should have a timing belt, the 97 and newer have timing chains.

Message: Drop a 318 or 360 in it with a 727 trans , I helped one of my friends swap 360 in an '88 and it worked out great. We swapped it in using a motor plate and a mid plate and used a '68 B-body 8 3/4 with 3.91's. One problem that we did have was that it was very tight up front so we swapped on a '93 Front clip and core support. It weighs a little over 3300# and runs 11.90's-12.10's depending on the time of year , he has about $6,500 in it including the $600 he paid for the truck with a blown up 2.5 and a 5 speed.
