Is there any good shocks available that will eliminate the rear end hopping and leaping to one side when a bump is hit with one tire? I used to have a 91 Jeep Comanche and it never did this. Is it the cheap factory shocks or the stiff springs that causes this?

A good set of shocks, springs, and sway bar will help but not totally eliminate it. A lot of it is because your weight distribution is front heavy. I changed my shocks to Tokico, have stock springs, and a sway bar that came with the Tire and Handling pkg. The problem is contained somewhat but depending on the bump mine will still do it on occasion.

It is because you have a stiff suspension and shocks. Plus the light weight in the rear does this too. The ride will be stiffer if you have good shocks and suspension, and the ride will be smoother if you have worn out shocks,springs... Just a few thoughts.

To a point...maybe. Having worn out shocks wreaks havoc on the tires and handling characteristics of the vehicle. If you want a happy medium, the (updated) Edelbrock shocks seem to work very well on the Dakota's.

This hopping or jumping to one side over bumps is part of having a live rear axle. It can be minimized by good springs and shocks, but never totally eliminated. I have the stock springs with Bilstein HD shocks at all four corners. A little jiggly but better control, especially in the front.

Stew-My truck is like that also ,if I hit a bump like a pavement joint at speed the truck wants to go sideways. If I hit a series of bumps it gets a little scary!!I had a 95 chevy 4x4 that did this also but my 98 Ram 4x4 did not it tracked straight on bumps.I do not have handling package that may be part of problem, but my truck always has a cap and about 400 lbs of weight in the back.I wonder if those staggered shocks have anything to do with this??
