Subject: dashboard(y22man?) IP: Logged
Message: I would like to know if anyone has taken off the top part of the dashboard of a 2000 dak. It looks like its going to be a bitch, but I would like to install some tweeters (possibly take my door speakers and remount them??) but I dont know how much room is under there. This, I would think, would drastically improve the front-imaging. thanks.

I have removed everything from my '99 dash except for the top (main) portion when I painted my dash. I thought about pulling the whole thing, but even when armed with the FSM I realized that it was going to be too much of a pain.
If you're concerned with sound imaging, pick up a nice set of components. The tweeter has plenty of room to mount in the top front door panel. If you're handy with fiberglass you can change the direction that the stock door speaker is pointing. Also Q-Logic makes kick panel enclosures for Dakota's, but expect to pay way too much form them.
Check out the following link for some custom installs in Dakota's. You'll definitely get some ideas from here.

Message: I've got separates up front (Polk/Momo): woofers in the stock speaker location, tweeters in the plastic where the mirror mounts. Plenty of room and unbeatable imaging. Much better than directing the tweeters up into the windshield.
