Subject: 5-speed driveability? IP: Logged
Message: I'm currently in the market for Dakotas, and I was curious about the 5-speed trucks. I'm currently looking at 97-99 Daks with the 318/5-speed combination. I was just wondering how comfortable the 5-speed is in city traffic. I've driven alot of manual transmissions in my day, but i've yet to own one in a truck.

Message: I am in mostly smallcity/town and highway driving and I think it works better than a auto. Learn to downshift well by matching rpm with wheels and it's awesome. Once you go to manual, you can't go back. Although in Seattle/Denver like traffic it can get kinda annoying.

Are you in Canada? Someone has stated that combination was only available in Canada.
Yet a service technician for Compaq here in the Sacramento area stated he had a 318 c.i. with 5-speed in a '97.
I have noticed you can get the Dakota overseas with a Detroit diesel engine, but not here in the 'States, also.

Message: I've seen a few 318/5-speeds in the states... not exactly common, but they were sold here.

Message: 5-spd in city traffic = not a problem. You get so used to it that it becomes second nature and you don't even think about it anymore. I am so glad I didn't get an auto.
