Subject: Differential Fluid for Towing
IP: Logged

Message:
The owner's manual for my '02 QC says that for towing, the rear differential fluid should be changed to a 75W-140 synthetic. Living in central NY, this seems a bit on the heavy side, especially in the winter. I only plan on towing 2500-3000 lbs for 1500-2000 miles per year. I was thinking of using AMSOIL 75W-90. Does anyone have any cold weather experience with a 75W-140 gear lube?

According to the technical data sheet that I have
from Amsoil both the 75w-90 and the 75w-140 have a
pour point of -51 degrees.

I'm in FL but did not take any chances. I was reading the manual as I waiting for them to finish my paperwork at the dealership and noticed that note on towing. So I pointed it out to the service manage and he changed the fluid right then and there for free. Strange that when the towing package is installed they do not make the switch at the factory.

I ran 140 weight in the rear end of all of my trucks year round. In the man. trans. I would run 140 in the warmer months and 75-90 in the winter. I have never had a problem. This was before I started useing synthetic gear lube. Since I now use synthetic I do not think I have used thicker then 75- 90wt in rear end and have not had any problems. If you stick with Amsoil or Redline I doubt that the viscosity is going to be a real factor in the rear end. While under warranty I would use their viscosity recomenddations but with the light load you are talking about you could gain some efficency with a lighter weight gear lube once you are out of warranty! When they right these recomendations the enginiers must assume that you are going to use the cheapest worst gear lube on the planet and tow loads at your trucks full capacity through death valley. If they assumed you were useing a high quality 100% synthetic gear lube I doubt that we would still be useing gear lubes as thick as we use. As C.A.F.E. standards rise over the next 10 years you will see thiner and thiner oils being used in the diff.s!!!!

As to whether you should use 75w-90 or 75w-140, personally I would use the synthetic 75w-90 since synthetic 75w-90 will perform above and beyond the recommended petroleum 75w-90.

I have Freightliner customers driving Class 8 Tractor Trailor Trucks using 75w-90 synthetic gear lube in their difs. Tuff enough for them ... Tuff enough for me.

Did you have any further questions regarding transmission lubricants?

yeah but when someone follows your advice and the rear dif gives out do you pay to replace it as the factory warrentee won't cover as the owner used the wrong grade oil??? My experience has been that amsoil does not pay if it breaks when the wrong oil is in the tranny of a mopar product.

billybob,
I'll get right back to you on the warranty info. Someone sent me an email asking about Amsoil pricing on gear lube and i told them I would post here. I am home and not at the office so I don't have my most current pricing but I do have pricing from May 2002.

AMSOIL PRICING (May 2002)
Series 2000 75w-90 $9.20 Qt. / 75w-140 $12.05 Qt. retail.(preferred customer $7.20 / $9.35 respectively). You can become a preferred customer for $20 per year and $10 for a 6 month trial and receive up to 25% off retail pricing.

I "believe" that GM charges over $13.00 for a quart for Goodwrench Synthetic 75w-90 GL-5 gear lube.

Dealers and their Demands

If your vehicle dealer takes issue with you using AMSOIL Synthetic oil and tells you that it will affect your Warranty if you don't use their OEM oil. Please have them refer to the Magnuson - Moss Act (1977) which states that if a Dealer requires (demands) that you use their parts or accessories, they must supply them "Free of Charge."

Amsoil Warranty Information
IP: Logged

Message:

Warranty Information as Promised:
--------------------------------------------------
Most Important: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Vehicle manufacturers recommend using motor oils meeting certain grades and American Petroleum Institute (API) service requirements. Whether the motor oil is petroleum based or synthetic will not affect warranty coverage. The manufacturer is required to cover all equipment failures it would normally cover as long as the oil meets the requirements and was not the cause of the failure.

AMSOIL exceeds these requirements and has never been deemed the cause of an engines failure. Even so, AMSOIL has its own limited warranty, protecting you even further. In addition, the federally mandated Magnuson-Moss Act states that a manufacturer may not require the use of a specific brand of aftermarket product unless it is provided free of charge.

* If a car dealership, service center or other business states that using AMSOIL will void your new vehicle warranty, ask for that statement in writing and send it to AMSOIL Technical Services (AMSOIl Inc., AMSOIL Bldg, Superior, WI 54880). If the business won't provide the statement in writing send AMSOIL Technical Services a letter identifying who made the statement, the name and location of the business and what the specific statement was. AMSOIL will then send a letter to the business informing them that their position is inaccurate, and, in fact violates existing law. Your name will be held in confidence. A sample of this letter can be provided upon request.
-------------------------------------------------
For additional information on Amsoil's Limited Warranty please visit my website.
--------------------------------------------------
Amsoil's Limited Warranty is in effect when Amsoil Products are used in mechanically sound engines, providing, of course the oil is kept free of contaminants by changing the oil filter according to the manufacturer's recommendation or, when using an AMSOIL Super Duty Oil Filter, changing the filter based on Amsoils oil and filter change recommendations.

Additionally, if there is ever a question of whether or not a particular oil was the cause of an engine failure make sure to get a sample of the used oil in a clean bottle, typically 6 oz. minimum. The oil can then be sent to two independent testing labs for analysis (labs are located throughout the country).
--------------------------------------------------
A reminder: Keep accurate service records and all purchase receipts
--------------------------------------------------
Remember, an informed consumer is your best defense against being taken advantage of by a vehicle dealership or service center.
--------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------
Additional ways to cover yourself with the Amsoil Limited Warranty:

Go to your local "quick lube" for oil change service. Just bring in your own Amsoil Motor Oil and Filter (or whatever other brand) and they will install it for you and provide you with a receipt stating "the customer provided their own oil". My "quick lube" charges me labor only and gives me all of the extras (freebies) you get when you're getting their standard oil change. They check all the other fluids, tire pressure, air filter, etc., etc. At my local "quick lube" the standard oil change is 19.95 and they charge me 14.95 when I bring my own Amsoil. This way I am covered no matter what, no questions asked, just "proof" of change.
--------------------------------------------------
Rather do it yourself? Here is what some of my customers do.

You can save your receipt from your Amsoil purchase, then take a DATED PHOTO of the odometer on the day that you change the oil.
--------------------------------------------------
Beyond these two options, I don't know what you could do.

Sincerely,

One more question, how about when you have the full time all wheel drive set up? I will probably start towing a mid size boat later this summer in the 3000 lb range. Do I also need to upgrade the axle lubricant in the front differential to SAE75W-140 rating too?

Thanks for the input!

My dad and I have owned 2 Dodge trucks with the 9 1/4 differential (1/2 ton in this case, still used in bigger dakotas). Each has towed 6000 lb hay wagons for 15 years running every summer, with anywhere from 10-45 bales in the bed for another 400-1000 lbs over the back wheels. Our '83 had the fluid changed for the first time in 1993 at 154,000 miles. Our '88 had the fluid changed for the first time at 130,000. I used to drag race the 83 and pop the clutch and do the normal things teenagers do with a V-8. Moral of the story: They both had dino 80w-90 from the factory and both of those differentials are still going at 200,000 miles and 160,000 respectively, with the original parts in the rearends. 75w-90 is fine

Dino oil does not reduce friction and wear or help improve fuel economy like a good quality synthetic oil can.

Most all vehicles built today come factory filled with synthetic gear oil from the factory.

My fiance just bought a new vehicle that has Mobil1 synthetic gear oil in the differential as factory fill and I will soon be switching it over to the AMSOIL Series 2000 75w-90 because I know it is a better product.
