Message: What have people done to force air directly into the stock air-filter box? It looks as though the turned elbow on the front of the stock air-filter box only sucks in air from inside the fender but the fender doesn't seem to have a real good direct flow of air. The viable option seems to be be removing the rubber flap on the left side of the radiator and running some sort of pipe/hosing from the bottom of the air-filter box directly to where the rubber flap would have been. That doesn't seem to logical though since that pipe/housing would be restrictive due to A/c lines and such.
I am not interested in getting an aftermarket intake kit or doing a complete homebrew so answers to the above question will be much appreciated. Thanks

Message: This is a dumb question guys, but ....after reading these posts for a few months on the rubber flap deal, I still don't see one in mine. Could it be because of the lines for the transmission and oil cooler? I have looked all over the passenger side of the motor thinking i'm just blind and can't see it. Am I going crazy here?

Message: Mine's got 'em... they are really narrow - about 2" across maybe and go from the top of the radiator to the bottom of the grill (top of bumper) right between the headlights and grill on each side.
What about the hole in lower grill next to the fog lights? It looks like where the tow hooks should be or maybe brake ducts? You could put something there and use some flexible dryer hose to route air UP to the air box maybe?

Message: Oops I re-read your post....you don't want a homebrew...
Do you have fog lights? You could run the hose JMII suggested from there
OR
Somthing that I was going to do was to use a heating duct 4"x6" of 4"x8" the kind that goes from a rectangle to a round outlet, with a side outlet...put that in the lower valance(sp?)
Run a hose/duct up to the front of the stock air box
am I making any sense here?

Message: I used 8"x8" heat ducting. It comes in an "L" shape, so I cut the right depth with extra to make a 3 sided box. the end of the box was notched for the tube, and the front is left open to the front.
using an "S" stip (for joining 2 ducts) I added an extra front piece which is removable (stops the "ram air") for when it raining hard or dusty/dirty conditions.
I also added another 4" to the top so it would somewhat seal to the hood.
Took about 3 hrs. and a reaming from the wife (ruined her sissors because I didn't have tin snips)

Message: with all of this hassle of designing and making a homebrew, will it make a difference if you remove flaps and add pvc piping? i understand that K&N helps with the performance, but all of that work seems like a little much

Message: I was looking around under the hood & thought relocate the battery to the bed, relocate the horns, & there's a nice big opening to the back of the grille! Of course, relocating the battery is a pain, but some people do it anyway for better weight distribution, no? Didn't see any easy way to route ducting from the air dam openings to the engine compartment. Looks like the factory hole in the fenderwell deal gets it's air mainly from around the headlight. I needed a weekend project, I'll see if I can come up with something.

Message: For true "ram air" & not just cold air induction.
Check out the flat shet metal between the filter and the silver module on the left. There is enough room there to cut a hole that tubing or ducting could be run through that would give access to the area directly behind the fog light & tow hook openings. The silver module would need to be relocated to the fenderwell.
Here's the same spot from underneath. The black part on the right is the inner fenderwell, to the left is the area behind the air dam. My Dak doesn't have fog lights so I could cut out the hole & use it as an air intake.
