Subject: 4WD on Dry Road? IP: Logged
Message: Hello I have a 98 v6 with "Part Time" 4WD. I was reading an explination on part time vs full time 4wd and it said on the part time 4wd you should never drive it on dry roads. It explained because the wheels can run at different speeds it can cause the drive line to bind and damage it. Is this true? When I tool the truck for a test ride the dealor popped it into 4wd on dry roads it didnt seem to bother it. Also in 4HI is there a speed limit I should remain below? I know in 4lo you need to go slower then 5mph..
Thanks

Message: DO NOT USE 4WD on dry roads!! What happens is the tires do turn at slightly different speeds. The drive train will bind up and something WILL break, usually a u-joint if your lucky. Just a short (10 or 15 ft) wont hurt but I wouldn't do it alot. Fulltime 4wd (all wheel drive) uses a different kind of trasfer case. Off road the ground gives enough to keep things from binding up on a part time system. As far as speed, it's best to keep it under 55. Can't think of why one would need to go that fast in 4wd.

Message: You can go faster than 5 mph in 4lo. Just not above 25 mph. The slower you go the better though.

Message: The diffrence in 4wd part and full is that in part the transfer case is locked and the front and rear wheels spin the exact same in full it is unlocked allowing play and freedom so no damaged is done. I would not buy a truck from your dealer because who knows what else they do on test drives he he. Going in a straight line in part time wont do anything bad even on dry pavement but its in the turning and if your lucky your car will just slip sometimes if you are in part time and you are driving in a turn your vehical will hop. See ya.
