Message: Last night I pu in a set of AC Delco FR3LS because my 93 4x4 Dakota w/318 idled a little rough with the Champions the previous owner had in befor. Now, I notice a little improvement in acceleration, but when the truck is idling, it is noticably rougher.I still am looking for a set of 8mm wires and a good performance cap & rotor at a store in my town, so those havent been replaced yet. As far as just the plugs go, what could I do about the rough idling?

Message: I would have preferred Autolite 3923 coppers. Did you check the gaps of all the plugs prior to installation? They should all be gapped according to your emission sticker under the hood or your owner's manual. You can't just change the plugs and expect it to be perfect. Get a Borg-Warner cap and rotor (brass contacts) and some MSD 8.5 mm Super Conductors.

Message: Ron, the Autolite 3923's and the AC Delco FR2LS are the same plug and heat range. All Andrew did was install a AC Delco version of the Autolite 3924.

Message: Hey, RonW, I made sure I gapped the plugs at .035 and as far the cap and rotor go, do you think I would do better with a performance cap/rotor from Accel? As far as the MSD 8.5's, I have been told that MSD doesnt make pre-made plug wires for my truck. What is their part number?

Message:
Borg Warner makes a good Cap and Rotor...the Accel are the same thing...just cost more.
On the plug gap, stick with the factory gap unless you're running either an aftermarket coil and.or ignition system (MSD). Then, you can increase the gap by .005" - .010".
MSD does make a set for the V8's: P/N# 32189 (These are for the Ram but the Ram and Dakota engines are the same.)

Message: Andrew, I put on a brass cap and rotor from NAPA, never could find a Borg Warer in my area. The Cap part number is M209, rotor is M206.
When you change the cap and rotor, it is easier to manage if you take the air cleaner off and have a diagram on what wire attaches where so you can unplug all the wires before removing the cap, if you try to pull one off at a time and attach the new cap, there is not enough play to move it out of the way and pull off the rotor.

Message: I have a '97 Dodge Ram 5.2. The truck seems to have ignition problems. It will not reach more than 3000 rpm and anything over that speed the truck starts to backfire and lose power.

Message: I have a 1997 Dodge Dakota sport with the 5.2L V8. I bought the truck about six months ago and I have been having a problem with the battery discharging if the truck is not driven everyday. After the first two discharges, I bought a brand new battery with more cca and I also replaced the part of the negative battery cable to fix a loose connection. The fix worked for a little while, until I left the truck sit for a day and the battery was completely dead today.

Message: yep. i got the backfire thru the throttle body goin on. only when the motor is cold. sounds like an 02 sens. but ima swap pcm before i crank in a min and see if its fix.
"ignition failure under load" is the term, and seems untraceable.
my guess is the pcm software, or something insane that should never be ... email me on this anyone having the ignition probs..
i WILL figure it out.
next plan is msd 6a box.

Message: you might want to switch to platinum plugs. i've been using bosch platinums since my 15 year old chev started oil fouling champion plugs. these platinum things REALLY work. it takes LOADs of oil to foul them.
i put them in my dakota at 60K when i did a tune up. i find that the truck idles a little smoother w/ them. i replaced cap&rotor at the same time, but i think that the plugs made the difference.
you might also want to replace the ignition coil. if its weak it will be more noticeable at idle.
