Message: Never had this problem before. When I turned the key the engine would turn over but wouldn't start. I tried for a few minutes normally then tried with the accelerator depressed and it started right away with a cloud of black smoke. When I released the pedal it would die immediately so I held the brake on and gave it some gas and put it in gear and started to move and then it was fine. It's running perfectly again after this one time so should I be concerned or is this something common to 01 daks? BTW it's a 3.9 auto. Any ideas?

Message: Well not really I have seen this lots of times. Where all it needs is the computer reset and the throttle body cleaned. Sometimes a new IAC. V-6s seem to be a little more prone to it. I think what Duner is refering to is the new injecors, where reliability is something of a issue. They have stuck open causing a bent con rod.
The reason, I think, the black smoke was because it didn't catch right away and the computer kept adding fuel. When you stepped on the throttle the clear flood feature kicked in and shut off the injectors allowing the fuel in there aready to burn. Keep a eye on it and report it to the dealer.

Message: I took my truck into the dealer this morning to have this problem checked. They hooked it up to the scanner and said there is absolutely nothing wrong. I asked about the TB and resetting the computer and also the injectors but they claim everything checked out fine and it was probably a one time thing. If anything major happens at least i've got the problem recorded on file and can take it back.

Message: This may sound funny but is your battery low or old?? I have had a similar problem in both my ram and my dakota. After running the stereo in my truck at work all day (on an old used up battery) the truck would start but if I let off the gas it would die. If I drove the truck for a while (letting the battery charge) eventually it would stop stalling. Replacing the battery made it stop doing this. I wonder if it has something to do with a drop in voltage or more draw on the alternator?? I don't know but sound similar to your problem
Hope this helps........

Message: WOW, same thing happened to me...I posted it earlier..Left my 6" offroad lights on all day....Then after I jumped the truck it kept stalling...CJ said that if the computer gets a low voltage reading it will stall,,,,After driving the truck around yesterday...all seems to be back to norm...His prob sounds a little different though

Message: The stalling problem seems the same but the truck is only 8 months old so the battery should be OK. As I said at the start, when it finally fired up after depressing the accelerater it blew out a big cloud of black smoke, so to my way of thinking it sounds like a fuel problem like CW suggested.

Message: It's been my experience with the dealerships I've been to, that unless it generates a code - they cannot or will not even look any farther. I think it boils down to how the warranty system works. Unless they have a documented code in the system that says there is a problem - they (the dealership) have a very difficult time getting DC to pay a warranty claim. The customer may say it made a big cloud of smoke and wouldn't start, but the dealership won't get paid for doing any work unless they can identify and change a defective part. They also won't get paid for spending an hour or so trying to diagnose a problem that happened 2 days ago but isn't doing it now. The tech might have a hunch about the problem because he's already fixed the same thing 6 times before, but without a defective part on the bench or a code in the system, his hands are tied.
CW or any other tech that frequents here.... am I pretty close with my description of how and why the warranty thing works that way? or does it work differently in other places?

Message: Duner
I think you make some valid points. Back in the 60s and 70s before everything was controlled by computer, when you took your car in to the dealer for repairs the service adviser would come outside and actually stick his head under the hood and try to figure out the problem first. Now it almost seems like their doing you a favor to listen to you describe the problem. When I went to the dealer to-day, as soon as I said the truck wouldn't start, she interupted me and said I must be using bad gas. I asked how she would think that when I hadn't even described the problem yet and she said "what else could it be". I've also got the 4 way flashers coming on when I activate the left turn signal which is no problem as they said they'll order a new multitask switch and it will come from the states in a week or so. I blew my stack and told her to get one from another dealer here in Toronto and she said they don't like to do that because they will have to pay for it. I explained that with a brand new truck I couldn't care less what they have to do, just do it. Any way they called an hour ago. They found a switch at another dealership and their installing it tomorrow morning. Funny how the dealerships are your best friend while your writing a $30.000.00 cheque then they conveniently forget about you.

Message: Well not at my dealership. I spend lots of time looking for stuff that generates no codes. But I am in Canada and maybe there are different rules concerening warranty. Personaly it doesn't sound like they want to even try to fix it. If you brought it to me I would start by looking in the throttle body seeing if it was clean or not. Good place to start anyways. Checking fuel pressue stuff like that.
Not to offend anyone in the US but I know that the techs in Canada have to go throught alot more training before we are called a technician. 4 years of on the job training coupled with off site schooling.
