Subject: abs & brake light
IP: Logged

Message:
My ABS and brake light have been coming on at the same time on my 2000 4.7, dealer said it was the rear sensor and wanted $242 to replace it. I checked this forum, and figured out how to replace it myself. Cost $30 and took 15 minutes. Thanks to all for saving me $210. Problem is, the lights are still on. Do I need to reset the computer or something??? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

How maney miles do you have on it? Seems that would have been covered. Reset by disconnecting the neg. side of the batt. for around 30 sec, I think. That should do it. But look into the warranty , they could owe you for the cost of part. Something just doen NOT sound right with that.

Okay, I reset the computer, but to no effect. The ABS and Brake lights are still on. The truck has 50k on it, the problem started at 37k but only occurred rarely. It's my luck to have it start right after the warranty expires. Any other ideas/suggestions?????

To reset the computer you have to disconnect the neg battery cable and turn the ignition key to start for 15-20 seconds , just disconnecting the battery cable does not reset the computer.

Check your fuses - tail lights or brake light short caused my ABS and brake indicators to stay on.

Somebody caught me from behind one day and said..

"Hey, you know your taillights are out?"

May have shorted it out towing a boat trailer

Good thought, but I've actually already checked that. I had a boat trailer that used to blow my fuses everytime, until I rewired the thing.

I read in another post that the front sensors may be causing this problem. Anyone know where these are located, and what the cost???

Theres hard and soft codes on the computer. Unplugging the negative coil will only allow you to reset the soft codes. If ABS and whatever else you said was a hard code, you won't be able to reset this. This has to be done by the dealer, or you can go have your oil changed and ask them to run a diagnostic on it and then to reset the computer.

Thanks Chris. Does anybody know if the ABS and Brake lights would be a hard code or soft code issue?

I put that sucker in as far as it would go. I'm running out of ideas here, might have to give in and take it back to the dealer and get screwed over.

Don94 - Let me know if your problem is solved by replacing the front valves, I'd appreciate it!

I just went through this fix myself, but I had a couple problems that I should warn you about. I called the dealer and asked for a "Speed Sensor". They gave me the wrong part. It actually went to the transmission. I had to go back, and a service guy told me it was a "ABS Sensor". Just make sure you get the one that goes in the differential. He also said that they are sometimes very difficult to remove in one piece. Maybe he jinxed me, because the old one broke apart into many small pieces while trying to remove it. I ended up having to pull the cover and cleaning the differential case to get the plastic out of it. A word of advice - have a tube of gasket maker and a couple bottles of gear lube handy when you do this!

Try bleeding the system at all four wheels and make sure your brake fluid is topped off. And check that the vacuum hoses are connected and secure.

Z-Tube, R/T Rims, SSB Rear Disc Conversion, Alpine Head-Unit, Infinity Kappa Speakers, SilverStar Headlights, HO Cams & Intake installed.

Got H.O. ?

BRO, I KNOW THIS ONE. GO TO DEALER = BUY THE SENSOR. ITS EASY AS PHUCK TO PUT IN, AND THE PART IS ONLY LIKE 60 BUCKS. EVERYTHING TO IT IS SELF EXPLANITORY. DONT PAY NO 250 FOR THAT. ITS TOO EASY TO DO YOURSELF. ANYWAYS, IT IS THE SENSOR, CHANGE IT YOURSELF!!!

Your computer will reset itself if the problem is corrected. If your speed sensor on the tranny was bad, you would be in 'limp in ' mode or second gear. If the computer see's that code not active after 255 starts then your lights should go off. Is your speedometer working ok? Did you notice any metal shavings in your rear diff?

Ok, The owner took the Dakota to the dealer, after I pointed out the brake+abs lites and convinced him it was a real problem, and had it fixed. Replaced a brake switch/sensor 4671334 $41.40, plus $150.00 labor. Last time they replacd the sensor on the diff, but that did not fix the problem.

Bought It....
