Subject: "no bus" IP: Logged
Message: My 99 Dakota dies while driving. Speedometer and Tach to zero, then "no bus" on odometer. Has been at 3 different dealers over the last month and a half, nobody can figure it out.
A couple of posts here with a similar problem, but no indication if the suggestions fixed the problem. PCM overheating and dash wiring problems are suggested, anyone ever seen the real fix to a problem like this?
Thanks,
Glenn Norum

Message: I have a 2000 Ram 1500 that had the same problem. For me in the Electrical Power Distribution Center ( The fusebox located in the engine compartment ) I have one big connector with a screw down through it that loosens or tightens the connection. Well for some reason that connector wasn't making good contact with at least one or 2 of the pins. I took that off, cleaned it up, and put it back on and everything worked fine. I'm going to clean it better with contact cleaner and coat it with some dielectric grease and see if it stands the test of time. From what I've gathered from many peoples posts is that this specific problem generally seems to be some kind of electrical contact problem and not the Computer or any other major part.

Message: ntfish is correct - no bus may be a dead PCM, but that's not a sure thing. It means a signal is not being received or acknowledged, could well be just a bad connection.

Message: "No BUS" does NOT mean a dead PCM. It's a message that tells you there's no BUS communication in between the Cluster and PCM. A bad ABS module, Bad PCM, Bad Cluster, Shorted Radio BUS wire, Bad BUS Bar, or shorted BUS wire can cause this.
You need to find out which module is causing the BUS short (watch the BUS Bias voltage while doing this).
Most common issue: ABS module...but not something you should go out and buy just to see if that fixes it. You will need to run voltage and resistance checks to fix it properly.
I've seen people come in at the dealership with No BUS problems and they've thrown a lot of money at it...still not fixed though.

Message: Thanks for the inputs. This actually happened 5 years ago, but just as a follow up, here's my results. I had it into 3 different dealers, the last checked continuity, grounds, connectors, etc. but I still went away with no suggestions of what it could be. This board recommended PCM problems, I bit the bullet and replaced it and haven't had a problem since.
To put in a good word - the first two dealers in So Cal had no clue, drove it around evenings and weekends, but didn't even offer a suggestion. The third dealer was on Sahara in Vegas - they had it for 3 days, did a lot of diagnostics, also came back with no suggestions. Great guy in charge understood my situation and didn't charge me a dime. Didn't fix my problem, but at least didn't add to it financially. I recommend them to anyone who will listen, and try to get through there for service when needed -
