Hey all,

1997 Dodge Dakota 4 cylinder 5 speed-

the clutch doesnt engauge until the pedal is almost all the way out- is this normal? Clutch doesnt slip- im just curious if this is the way these clutchs operate- or if i need to adjust it- or if im due for a replacement. Thank you.

No adjustment, it just means that it is worn out.

Two or four-wheel drive?

Two-wheel drive: Not too aweful bad. Rent a tranny jack. Buy a manual, if you don't all ready have one. Read the clutch replacement section completely, and then re-read it a couple of times. Assemble the necessary parts & tools. You will have to drop the rear driveline, and then the tranny.

Four-wheel drive: Same as above, but you will have to drop both the front & rear drivelines and then drop the transfer case before dropping the tranny.

My suggestion is to honestly evaluate your own wrenching skills. All of us "shade tree" mechanics have to start somewhere, but a clutch isn't a good place to start in my opinion.

Wait, these are hydralic clutchs, right? The pedal actually hooks to a cylinder in a fluid reservoir, which increases the force using simple hydralic principals, right?

If so, my old '86 Cavalier 5-speed had a similar issue with it. Clutch seemed to work great, but there wasn't any activity until it was half engaged or more. Ended up being low fluid in the hydralic reservoir, which was letting air into the system. Air compresses, fluid doesn't. Refilled reservoir, problem solved. :0)

Ah... here it is... Directly from my repair manual..

5) Other than to replace components with obvious damage, some preliminary checks should be performed to diagnose clutch problems.

a) The first check should be of the fluid level in the clutch master cylinder. If the fluid level is excessively low, add fluid as necessary and inspect the hydralic system for leaks (fluid level will actually rise as the clutch wears).

b) To check "Clutch spin down time", run the engine at normal idle speed with the transmission in Neutral (Clutch pedal up - engaged). Disengage the clutch pedal (pedal down), wait several seconds and shift the transmission into Reverse. No grinding noise should be heard. A grinding noise would most likely indicate a problem in the pressure plate or the clutch disc.

c) To check for complete clutch release, run the engine (with the parking brake applied to prevent movement) and hold the clutch pedal approximately 1/2-inch from the floor. She the transmission between First gear and Reverse several times. If the shift is hard or the transmission grinds, component failure is indicated. Check the release cylinder pushrod travel. With the clutch pedal depressed completly, the release cylider pushrod should extend substantially. If it doesn't, check the fluid level in the Clutch Master Cylinder (see Chapter 1)

d) Visually inspect the pivot bushing at the top of the clutch pedal to make sure there is no binding or excessive play.

e) Crawl under the vehicle and make sure the clutch release lever is solidly mounted on the ball stud.

Yeah, these Haynes Repair Manuals are da bomb...

Too bad my truck is a 2000, and the manual only does up to '99... most everything is the same, except wiring harnesses and some other small stuff...

It is really hard for me to shift into gears now. I can barely get it into first gears without really putting some muscle on the shifter. Does this mean I need a new clutch or could my shifting problems be fixed by adjusting the clutch.(If so how do I adust the clutch. I really dont want to take it to a machanic) She is a 96 dakota with 127K miles. She has always been treated nice and never ragged out.

I have a different problem with a 98 Dakota 2.5 5-speed. Clutch doesn't disengage at all! Just replaced the m/c with no luck. Bled ALL the air out of the system and checked that the slave is pushing in the rod. I's all working, but the clutch still won't disengage. Any clues? There's been an 18 yr-old driving it, could the plates be locked up from burnouts? He swears he didn't do it.............

Could be a pressure plate issue.

I had one crack once on an older 4 banger/manual tranny truck I used to have, clutch wouldn't disengage.

replaced clutch in 2000 dakota 3.9 due to throwout bearing failure and slave cylinder also exploded due to pushing too hard on pedal when throw out bearing was destroyed and wouldn't move. bled and still no pedal, never even broke plastic retainer. replaced master ans still same results. could not get line to lock to aftermarket slave so I removed roll pin and installed oem push lock fitting on new slave. Bled for hours and still no pedal. What in the world am I missing? Everythings new... Please help...

put in a new clutch im my 2002 dodge dakota every thing went fine until I went to put it in gear. It seemed like the push rod was not pushing it all the way in. So the pedal was going all the way to the floor before it would go in gear. So I know there is no adjustment so what can be done to get me more pedal so it goes in better. I know there is no blead screw becauce it is a sealed system. Anthing helps thanks John.

Sticky Clutch

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 4.7 V8 5 speed. After
about 15 miles my clutch starts to squeak and the
more you drive the worse it gets until it
eventually starts to stick when you disengage,
slamming the clutch against the flywheel instead
of a smooth shift. I have replaced the clutch and
pressure plate and still the problem occurs. Has
anyone had this problem? and or knows what the
problem is?

I have a 2000 Dodge Dakota 2.5 5 speed, i just
recently replaced the clutch on the trany and when i
drive it the clutch pedal is like water, no
stiffness what so ever. what could be wrong? Is
there a place where i can pump the clutch like
pumping the brakes? if there is i couldnt find it.
Any help would be great.

There is no bleeder on the hydraulic clutch. The
whole assembly, clutch slave - clutch master
cylinder is one assembly.

Was the pedal good before? It may be a problem with
the pressure plate.

There are no adjustments in the clutch linkage.

i have a 96 dakota manual transmission. i can put the shifter into
any gear with ease and without using the clutch. i was driving it and
it acted like it just went into neutral. the clutch pedal always was
kinda soft or easy to press. would this be the slave or master
cylinder? when pressing the clutch the slave moves like pressure
going into it

Troy,

If it seems like its in neutral your clutch has
probably failed, is slipping.

By default, the clutch is engaged. If the any part
of the hydraulics fail, the clutch won't disengage.

Is it the original?
