Subject: SMEC vs. Dealer

I was having idle probloms with my 94' so i finally gave up and took it to the dealer. I have changed the o2 sensor, cleaned the TB and added chemicals to remove water from the fuel. The service department has now informed me that the SMEC is damaged and needs to be replaced. I beleive I am thinking of the right computer, the one over my passenger side wheel well. They want $350 to replace it(I think they are insane) so I went in to make sure we were all talking about the same 'puter. They claimed that they have to set the values in the SMEC or it won't run right. My argument is that when I put in the Mopar proformance computer I didn't need any special controler to set the values. Am I right in thinking that if i just get a new SMEC and plug it in it will work and reaclimate it's self(looking in CW and bernd's direction)? Thanks in advance. And I have till tuesday to get this all sorted out, that's when the new part comes and either they fix it or I do.

You already have a MP computer?

Do you have the old one to switch back to?

If you do, switch back to that one, does it still idle funny?

Is it stalling when you let your foot off of the gas coming to say a stop sign?

What color is the IAC motor silver or black plastic?

Mo info needed.

I do have the MP controler. I don't have the stock controler since i sent it in for a core charge. It has stalled when coming to a stop. Has also stalled sitting waiting for a light. The idle just bounces most of the time now between about 175 rpm and 600rpm, huge jumps it seems. The IAC motor has a silver body.
If I am taking all this right, which i may not be, I should be able to order a new MP controler and plug it in. The service dept. is saying they always reset values, so that puts me out of my realm. They also ordered a stock controler after I explaned that I wanted another MP controler. Your help is greatly appriciated.

The silver body IAC has since been superceaded. It reacts to slow when it gets older. Go get a new IAC motor. Preferably from the dealer because the parts have been up dated. It will have a black body. Install it, reset the computer and start it without touching the gas pedle and let the computer find the idle. I would be willing to bet that your idle problems will be behind you after that.

Really? It is possibly that simple? How does the service deptment determine whether the computer is bad or not? I'm not trying to second guess you at all, just this is something completely different than the PCM being damaged.

After a few moments of reflection let me get this all strait: you think that the IAC motor is bad and I should try replacing that before I drop the cash for a new computer? I understand that this is how the PCM controls the idle, but it could really make it act that bad? Had no idea but I had thought about changining it but decided those things never go. Do you happen to know a ballpark figure for how much one of those motors might run me and would one from a 99 3.9 TB work so I could swap it to try it with one in the dak sitting in the driveway right now?

Just check the connector but I am pretty sure it should work. Just remember to reset the computer and to not touch the gas on start up. Clean off the plunger but don't rotate it.

Probably about $50 for the IAC. Some shops that don't know what they are dealing with automaticly blame the computer. I see it all the time. 99% of the time it has nothing to do with the computer.

I swapped the IAC motor with the one off the other truck and what a difference it made. So fare it idles better than I can remember it idling. I brought it home from the dealers lot and at the moment I am planning on leaving them a voicemail saying I will be back there after work to settle up. You think they would waive the $60 diagnosis fee since they didn't get it right? I figure it's doubtful.

Well, seems now that it isn't fixed. Took it for a spin and it idled high. I figured it needed to aclimate it's self to thenew motor. I stopped by a freinds house for 30 min. and when I fired it back up it stalled then ran rough all the way up to 2000 RPM. Guess it might have to go back.

Ok, this is really staring to get stupid. The motor from the other truck runs pretty good. The new one that i bought today is awful. I changed back to the plastic style and i'm going to drive it to work tomarrow and see what happens. It has always been a problom when I want to get home from work, so why would tomarrow be an exception?
Now the problom is i don't know if i'm paranoid and just picking on the idle or if it has always had a bit of a jump to it at times. Nothing big, just enough so i see it if i watch the tach. I never noticed it before, but it was never watched closly before. I really appriciate all your help. If it really is the motor that saves me $200.

Well, i went into the dealer today to pay up and get my key back. They asked what i changed and then with a smirk the guy at the counter said that the computer had a cracked board. Well if those ass clowns would have told me that on friday instead of acting like it was fried I could have ordered tha parts them. Even with all this hassle I will still get it fixed cheaper than they would have. Guess it worked out, atleast so far.
