Subject: Replace a Serp Tensioner IP: Logged
Message: My '98 V6 Dakota's serpentine belt tensioner started to seize up on me after 45k. The Mechs told me it would cost over $200 to replace. Can your average do-it-yourselfer replace a tensioner? If so, any special instruction/tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Message: Dont buy one from the dealer, all you need is a new bearing, and the dealer will tell you you can't replace it. WRONG.... take the tensioner off and get the number off the bearing, call a bearing supplier that has listings for automotive bearings and give it to them, A new one will cost you about 3 bucks, but you will have to take it to a machine shop and have the old one pressed out, and the new one pressed in. Had to do it on my old ladys Voyager, cost about 20 bucks in the end compared to $180 for a complete tensioner from the dealer.

Message: When dealing with tensioners I always buy them from
NAPA because they have a better bearing assembly
and they use steel instead of the plastic pulley that
some manufacturers use.
For some vehicles they offer a standard duty and a
heavy duty version which is about five dollars extra in
most cases.
