Message: My brother has a 1988 4X4. We did not get an owners manual with it, so he only has the visor to refer to about shifting to 4wd. It says you can shift from 2H to 4H while rolling, but the lever fights us like its stuck (can not physically get it even to the 4H position, never mind past it) and it does not fully engage (makes a nasty noise this way and probably isn't driving the fronts at all). We tried from a standstill in neutral and its the same deal. Does anybody have any ideas? Does anyone have the instructions from the owners manual they can email to st.peter@godofallmedia.com ? I was wondering if this is one of those trucks you have to back up to lock the hubs.
Thanks for your help.

Message: According to the owners manual in my 97 4x4 you can shift into 4wd at speeds of up to 50 miles an hour!! Now I would never do this, but have regularly shifted into 4 at 20 to 30 mph without any problem. You do have to stop and put the tranny in neutral to shift into 4low though. As far as locking the hubs, no the hubs should lock themselves. Sounds like there is a problem with your transfer case or the its linkage. Hope this helps!!

Message: I have a 1989 4x4. You DO NOT need to back up to engage it into 4wd as far as I know. I do it all the time moving forward, usually around 5-10 mph just to be careful. Something in the drivetrain is probably causing this. I doubt its the 4x4 shifter near the front axle, the little gray shiny colored unit. It must be something somewhere in and around the drivetrain. I'll check into my owner's manual to see what it says. You can also read the manual at any auto parts store, they usually have a whole libarary of automotive owner's manuals available for customers to read.

Message: You know what it feels like? If you have a car with a floor shift and try to move the shifter without depressing the button, you can fight it so far. Is there a button or lock he should be pressing? I'm not at the truck today, so I can't check this out yet.
Thanks.

Message: what should happen is youi should be able to pull back nice and easy and everything should go smooth, when you pull on the lever it engages the linkage in the tranfer case, and trips a sensor to switch vacume lines to move the shift collor and the front axle and lock the front tires in, i think the shift collor will engage the right tire with the left tire so they are both turning, but im not sure on this, but to me i sounds liek its something messed up int he trnafer case

Message: and i shift mine anywhere from 1-50 mph, as long as you are on a slick surface liek sand, snow, or mud it should not hurt it

Message: Why do they say not to drive it at all (hi or lo) in 4wd if the pavement is dry? Shouldn't you be able to keep it in 4hi all the time and think of it as an all-wheel drive car?

Message: NO!!!!!
DONT!!!!
when on the dry pavemnt there is TOO much traction, the front driveshaft is not made to handle the one wheel turning more than the other going around corners]
thats why,so DONT EVER DO IT, you need to be in a low traction surface like sand, mud, dirt, snow, ice, ect

Message: Sounds like they took the cheap way out (no differential?). I would hope this is something they've fixed in later years.

Message: I have an 88 4x4 it's the second one I've owned, both trucks were able to shift into 4 hi at any speed! The truck I have now has 225,000 kms on it, and I live at 3700 ft above sea level, we get plenty of winter!!Nobody can touch me on the worst road conditions! This little shortbox with good winter tires(Trac Edge BF Goodrich) will hold the road better than the 93 Toyota T-100 4x4 I had in the snow or ice!!!I can shift into 4 hi at 120 KPH just pull steady and let off the gas a little, it will slide in!It helps to have the truck warmed up, they don't like to go in when it's cold.
