What year did dodge start putting 3 cats on the daks ??? I have a 00 R/T and have not looked under the truck since I got it a couple months ago. Any help would be appreciated.

If there are 3 on mine should the pre-cats be right behind the header ? (between header & y-pipe)

I think they started the 3 cat thing in 01 models, they are right below your fire wall on the down pipes.

There may or may not be 3 cats. I was under the impression that all 2001 and up trucks had 3 cats. I crawled under my truck today and I have no pre-cats. I have one main cat with an 02 sensor in front of and behind it. According to my FSM, that means I have emission package NAA which also corresponds to my build sheet. If you have emissions package NAS or NAE, then you have 3 cats. You have one 02 sensor in front of and behind each pre-cat and a main cat, which has no 02 sensors in front of or behind it.

Legally, you can't remove any. If you have a 3 cat setup and you get rid of the main cat, you might still pass smog if you have a sniff test. If you have a 1 cat setup and your remove your one cat, you'll fail smog. And if you don't get a Kat Box or some other device to fool the truck in to thinking you still have 02 sensors, the truck will run lousy. In either scenario, removing the cat may reduce your backpressure so much that your torque will get killed unless you are using forced induction i.e. turbo or a supercharger.

CW or someone can correct me, but I believe just the 4.7's have 3 cats. My 5.9 has just the one that I can tell.

My 4.7 has only one cat, as I stated above. It depends on what emissions package your truck gets ordered with. In CT, they get ordered with NAA - which means one cat.

I know the 2001s have 3 and the 2000s have one but I haven't looked at any 2002s yet.

PAY ATTENTION. 2001 and 2002 4.7 trucks may or may not have 3 cats. It depends on where you live and what emission package (i.e. build code) was ordered with your truck. CW, if you look in a 2001 FSM, you should be able to find your answer.

I'd say the best way to find out how many cats your truck has is to get under the damn thing and look for yourself! How hard is that?
