Subject: Synthetic Oil Change IP: Logged
Message: I have a new 2002 dakota with abour 800 miles on it, I wanted to change my enging oil to a synthetic oil, is there a "break in" period where I have to use "dino" oil, or can I just put in the syntehtic, and if there is a "break in" time, how long is it?

Mikey,
It is the Industry opinion that you should always break in an engine with an oil from the factory. This allows the engine to break in the fastest. If you use an oil that reduces wear better than most oils, you slow the process. Also it is best to use the factory oil to clean the motor of residual assembly material that is in the motor during that first 1,000 miles or so and then go to the Synthetics.

Message: so basically, run the car in the factory oil for about 1000 miles or so, before changing it to synthetic? just making sure cause I heard somewhere that I should use "dino" oil for about 8000 before changing it to synthetic?

Message: I usually change my own oil, but lately I dont seem to have the time, so I was thinking of taking it to the dealership to have them do it. If I request Synthetic, will they use a pure synthetic or the same stuff that was used from the factory?

Message: The dealership should have Mobil 1 available. There is a part number for it in the system due to the Viper.

Message: My whole family uses Amsoil including my Mom who
just bought a new GMC Jimmy (I wish she would have
picked out a Durango).
If you take your Dakota to a quick lube or the
dealer they will put in you own oil if you have it
with you.
I use the Amsoil XL-7500 and change the oil every
7,500 miles while under warranty just to keep my
dealer happy, after that I do my own thing!
I use nothing but Amsoil and I have a lot of
people that laugh at me for doing so and that
doesn't bother me whatsoever because I am the one
who "NEVER" has had a premature engine or
transmission failure and I tow some pretty big
trailers (one 33 ft. long and over 8,500 lbs. and
one 16 ft. Cargo Craft enclosed trailer).

Message: Most breakin wear happens within the first 600 miles. If we were talking about a small block made in the 1950-1990 I would say ya give it 3000 miles. Engines today are finished much better and the manufactures have designed them to breakin quicker. They adhere to tolerance's much closer, tapered rings, moly top ring....... some parts are even moly or zink coated just for breakin purposes. If it makes you feel better 200 more miles will make an even 1000 miles.

Message: If you realy want to know when your engine is broke in you can determine this simply. Measure wet and dry compression and a leak down test. If you do this new and then do it again at 600-1000 miles you should see all the reading stablize at spec. You can also use oil testing to determine when wear particales are down to some what deterine state of the engine.
