Subject: Engine Wash IP: Logged
Message: Silly question time. My engine bay badly needs a wash, do I just pop the hood and go to town with the pressure washer? Or is that going to seriously screw something up? If so how do I go about washing the engine?

Turn the engine ON.. just because that's me..
Hose the whole thing down w/ Degreaser VERY WELL everything get it all.. a few times.. Let it sit for a minute or 2 then hose it all off.
Do it again if you have to .. but that's what I'd do.. I'm looking for advise as well.. any suggestions?

Message: Just let it air dry for a while before starting it back up. I started mine up to soon and the sparkplugs started to misfire (they were grounding themselfs out from the water) and it killed my pre-cats.

Message: YOU HAVE TO COVER UP ELECTRONICS !!!!!!!!!!!
Use plastic bags like you get from the grocery store. Cover up pcm, fuse box, any other electronics, and cover up the air hat to.
Use a degreaser and warm water. The best way to get it clean is to get a bucket of soapy water and a rag and wash as much as you can. You can get off some of the gunk just by a hose. I will get the name of the detailer spray when I get home kinda like armor-all.

Message: Normally, try to keep water away from the distributer(sp) cap, computer and air intake. Ohter than that,,,, well, hose the sh!t out of it.
If you get any water inside the distributar cap, pop it off and spray the inside with WD-40.
this will get the water out of the distributar.
If by some freak of nature, or shear stupidity you happen to get water in the air intake, the best thing to do is remove all the spark plugs and spin the engine over A few times( DO NOT LOOK INTO THE SPARK PLUG HOLES while doing this !!!!! )

Message: I use the purple stuff, available at Auto Zone, WalMart, etc. for power washers. Don't dillute. Spray on a cold engine, everywhere, let sit for about 90 second, hose off entirely. Takes off everything, very nicely. I use it to detail my motorcycle engine. Be careful around aluminum wheels, other soft metal areas. In fact, I'm going outside right now to spray off the 3.9. All this grren pollen crapola around here in Virginia is driving me nuts. Best / Jim

Message: CD-2 is the name of the stuff I use. It comes in a two pack. One can of degreaser and one can of detailer. It's about $8-$10 and works really good. You should be able to get it at any automotive store. The detailer is the best stuff to use !!!!!!!

Message: I always use the Simple Green ($8.00 per gallon
from Sam's Club) and I spray it on the engine
un-diluted, then I attach a hose to the drain of
my hot water heater and wash the engine using hot
water.
The Simple Green WILL NOT damage or burn alloy
metals like most of your purple high strength
cleaners will.

Message: *Do not use Greased Lightning* The engine looked really good until about a week later when my intake was pitted. Is there anyway to fix this? I tried using Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish but it just left a cloudy white spot *(

Message: Greased Lightning, Castrol Super Clean and others are very caustic and will ruin aluminium.
Iv'e used Simple Green and similar. Cover all electronics and do what you can by hand. Like others have said, spray, soak and rinse. There are so many electrical connections With the new cars I personally don't use a high pressure spray.
WD-40...Water Displacement after the 40'th try.

Message: A quick tip: some degreasers leave your aluminum components looking kind of "chalky". Spray them with WD-40 after your motor dries, and they will look brand new.
