 Subject: Starter question

About 3 weeks ago I changed my starter. Now it just clicks at me like the solinoide is bad once again. I pulled it out and besides looking new still there is a little port that is open. It is oriented to the bottom on the side where the wires go from the solonoid to the motor. It looks like there was somesort of cover there at one point becase now ther is just a ring of rubber connected to a little flap. Looks like it was worn off or something. I can see through to the armature. Can anyone fill me in on what this hole is, what went there, and can I get the missing whatsit off the shelf? Why does everything go bad at once?
