Subject: Auto Trashmission - A Waste
IP: Logged

Message:
I was a former victim of an automatic trashmission. I can't believe how much money I spent on it to get it to - shift like a stick, be durable like a stick, even raise shift points - which I can do wherever I want with a stick. Shift kit=dollars. Deep tranny pan=dollars. Torque converter=dollars. Even the custom flashs, PCM's, and chips. What do they trumpet as key improvements? Raising shift points and shift firmness. With my 5 speed, I can do that off the lot. And lets not forget all that horsepower automatic trannies swallow up in drivetrain loss.

I'm sure automatics have their place. Hey, soccer mom's can probably use them in their minivans. If you have a brain and you like to drive, save yourself some money and get a 5 speed. You can put that money into intake, exhaust mods, etc. that really make a difference. YMMV - maybe. Remember, I speak from experience as a former victim of auto trashmission ownership.

my 4x4 isn't a race car, when or if I buy a sports car, that's when a standard is a definite must. but pulling a car, a trailer etc.. it's so much easier to do it with an automatic.

yea it's a lot funner with a standard, my last two vehicles were 5 spd's.

But I think they each have their place.

Now that you have made having and automatic tranny so horrible I would like to sell my truck. Are there any takers ?? I must warn you it is an automatic.I must have a stick shift now. I dont understand why people get their rocks off telling people their stuff sucks. Why dont you try something constructive like being helpful. Who wants to drive a stick shift in stop and go traffic. I know I don't. If I lived in bum f@#$ Eqypt I would buy a stick. Sorry you guys in bum F&^% Egypt just usuing you as an example. I dont think I am a victim of an auto trany. I know I can relax when I drive and put my hand where it belongs. Beteween some girls legs. My tirade is over I can now rest.

Who cares where your shift point is...it's a frickin TRUCK!

There's nothing worse then people who try to turn their truck into a sports car.

If you ever had owned a real sports car you'd feel pretty foolish driving your pickup truck around like it's a hot rod.

56k_is_gay hit the nail on the head.

I HAD an '97 Eclipse GS-T Turbo, it would run circles around ANY Dak and it was complete STOCK, no extra $ on mods needed! How you ask? - well it was small, light, 5 SPEED, 210HP (214TQ), turbo powered rocket that's how. But it could not tow my boat so I traded it in.

I agree that ATs are not very good at shifting, but since I only have two feet, I'm not very good at pulling out of steep inclines with a heavy load on a slippery surface with three pedals.

The point of mod'ing a truck isn't to make it more like a sports car! Anyone off of the street can buy a little ricer, put a giant tip on the exhaust get the monster whale tail and all those high-speed decals (lol) and *pretend* to be fast. Most of us who drive the trucks actually like the feel of bearing down on cars and being able to work with some decent muscle under the hood and not some little 4-banger.

I would love to see how a ricer that tips the scales at over 4000 pounds performs, my guess is not too well. I love trucks, why should I have to give up speed and performance ... it's got the muscle and capability, all it needs is TLC.

BTW: I am not anti-4-banger, Porsche and Lotus KNOW how to make a performance 4 ... the little honda civics (not VTEC) are useless IMO.

Wow, the primary method of transportation in Egypt is still camels eh? Where have I been all this time?

If I want long term durability or all out performance a manual trans is the why to go. If you live in the city and are not into self punishment an automatic is the way to go! It is common knoldge that an automatic cost alot more to own and will nt last as long with out a major overhaul. My QC is an automatic mostly due to wifes request and she loves it. I had to teach her to drive stick when we met and she has never realy liked them. She was also hard on clutchs.

Im gonna have to go with the auto's. I dont miss a gear, im not shiftin every 3 seconds in the city, I can use the extra hand for more important things, and if i maintain it, I'm sure it will last me as long, if not longer than your clutches will last you. main thing though, an auto doesn't fall victim to human screw ups. Thats why you only see autos on drag racers. But, I will say one thing, as far as street goes, If you prefer an auto, srive an auto, same with a stick. There are ups and downs to both.

I find it remarkable that among a group of people dedicated to putting mods on their truck, to doing anything to get more power, that you are all addicted to automatics. Performance=manual tranny. To each their own I guess.

Maybe if the Dakota came with a PERFORMANCE 5-speed you might have something there. But it has a deep 1st gear truck transmission that ultimately will not be faster then an automatic with a bunch of mods. Duner even thinks his turbo 4.7 may be faster with the auto at this point.

If you have a transmission with a shiftkit and a good stall converter 99% of the people on the street & stip cannot keep up. The problem with auto`s for performance is the driveline loss is 10% more than a manual trans,so you take 2 bone stock dakotas with same running gear and the 5speed will beat it everytime. The 5speed with the 3:55`s is great in stock trim but with a S/C or Duners turbo I would want some higher gears

I'm getting ready to trade my 6spd 97 Ram Air Trans Am in on a 4.7L SLT Plus Club Cab... and in the truck I choose an automatic!!!

In the T/A, the 6spd is the way to go. So much fun to shift and drive... and no truck could compare to it's incredibly short throw and awesome feel.

But that said. I live in a huge metropolitan area and "rowing thru the gears" even with a set-up as nice as what the T/A has can to be a pain (nothing like inching along in rush hour traffic, clutching it in and out every 10 feet!) I'm looking forward to the automatic.

But I should also add that I'm not looking for the Dak I purchase to be a "performance" vehicle. If I wanted that I'd stick with the T/A (there ain't nothin' like the feel of a 300+ horse Ram Air fed 5.7L!!!) :-) No, I'm getting the Dak to be more functional. Besides, I'll still have my 79 400 (6.6L), 4spd Trans Am for those times when I want to slam gears and have fun! :-)

Different people have different tastes and different needs... one's not better than the other... just different.

Art you may have a point if there is a professional driver behind the wheel !!!!! My buddy can really shift some gears but even he has a hard time keep up with auto's. The average joe putting mods on his car or truck is not a pro driver and will not be able to shift like one. A 10% drivetrain loss seems to be a little high, but that still is enough to keep people at bay with manuals.

heh...this is getting as bad as the debate between the 4.7 & the 5.9.

Bottom line is that different people want different things out of their rides. We have different lifestyles, drive differently, and do it all in different driving conditions. Couple that with the fact that some people don't know how to drive a manual, and you get a hodge-podge of people that have alliances for one transmission over another. In a nutshell, it is things like this that make us individuals. But, it is forums like this and our mutual love for our rides that make us a community.

So, if someone wants to by an automatic, drop in a shift kit & better torque convertor, I am ALL for it. Good for them, I say!! After all, forums like this are dedicated to basically one thing: sharing our technical & emotional experiences both good & bad.

My point was not that all automatics suck. But that you can spend an awful lot of money getting an automatic to do things that a stick will do off the lot, particularly in terms of how you shift and where you shift. Yes, you pay a price for convenience. But you get less drivetrain loss, better gas mileage, better 0-60 times, less weight, and it you usually don't have to pay extra for a stick shift.

I'm a professional driver and I still bought an automatic. Of course by professional I mean I possess and AZ (Truck) liscense and spent a few years shifting gears all day long (and sometimes all night). When it came time to get the new truck, I was sick and tired of shifting - so I chose the automatic.

let me say sorry to all you pro stick drivers before i start. i havent been up against to many people that can shift a stick fast enough. ok 1 to 2 anyone can fudge. after that to much time delay and rpm lost to see the difference. ive had and ran both. i could go sideways with my stang into 2 and chirp 3rd. but took time and motor mounts to learn how.
and most guys run a stick upto red line before shifting. probably should have shifted sooner. most engines stop making power well before red line. sound good though!

Everybody's all concerned over shifting their way down the track in a straight line. I've been grabbing gears since for 15 years now (6 of those on the drag strip) so missing shifts is a rare thing for me...... BUT, once you get to the end of the straightaway, some people like to turn left or right. I want someone to show me an electronically controlled automatic that can downshift when i feel like downshifting. Compression braking is a beautiful thing in the Downtown Stoplight Gran Prix. The 5-spds have it, the autos don't. I'll sacrifice a tiny little bit of consistency and speed in my 2-3 shift for the ability to heel & toe on the exit ramps & corkscrews.......

But that's just me.
